SBS 2008 and Windows 8.

$

I am assuming firstly that all our clients attached to sbs 2008 which currently are either Vista Business or Windows 7 cannot be upgraded to Windows 8 and seamlessly work with the server. Am I right?

I would however like to upgrade my home laptop which is Windows 7 Pro to the Windows 8 pro at the fairly good upgrade price we have where in the UK. Now I use this to logon remotely to RWW with either IE9 or (mostly) a Remote Desktop Connection. I do not connect this laptop to the local server network (always remote) and it is not joined anyway. Can I upgrade this laptop to Windows 8 Pro and expect it to work as it does not without change to the RWW or RDT settings, etc.?

On just purely the upgrade idea, is it worth it if my laptop does not have a touchscreen?

Not sure if anyone has done this. Thanks.

10 users, all use exchange/file/print, at least 8x concurrent SQL user for LOB app.

I want to virtualise (I think), although tempted to stick SQL on the base SBS server.

Current server running SBS2003 Prem, is now 6years old and starting to creak and groan.

Is this over kill?

  • 512mb Raid controller
  • 6x 300Gb SAS Hard drives (RAID10??)
  • 2x Xeon Processor quad core
  • 32Gb Ram (I was recommended 24Gb, but cost difference was only about 80GBP!)

Cost with the licenses coming in at 5.5K GBP. Would like to think we'd get atleast 5yr life cycle....

Months after Migration from SBS 2003 to 2011 - exchange 2003 needs to be removed.

I am an IT Pro who inherited 3 customers from another IT Pro who had performed SBS 2003 to 2011 Migrations. In the three cases, the exchange portion of the migration was improperly done.

The New Servers are mostly working properly and the old servers are no longer in existance. In all cases, there are references to the old SBS 2003 servers in AD.

I'm thinking that I'll need to manually remove the 2003 servers from the AD and Exchange. Is there a clear and concise article on how to do this? Do I need to contact MS Phone support?

Situation: Current SBS2008 w/exchange is an instance on HyperV. Exchange is at it base level (no service pack installed). Having issues installing SP3 and running out of disk space.

Can I  migrate SBS2008 AD to SBS2012 without Exchange?

Also, can I push Exchange 2007 to the Hosted Online Exchange and then move it back to new physical server to be kept in a mixed mode.

Or do I shot from the hip and attempt the migration as is. Really stuck.

We are able to access the consoles from a command prompt before logging into server but still can get it all back correctly working. What can I do next?

SBS2003 - SBS2011 Migration - Error

Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 to 2011 Migration.

I followed the Migration Guide from Microsoft and the source server had no errors when running the various tests prior to the migration.

I have completed the destination server setup using the Answer File and the server is up and running. It all looks good, I can access Exchange and AD and the only problem is the error message when you log in stating that the setup did not complete and to check the logs.

Because all looks good I am continuing the migration to the destination server. I also have to state that this client does not use Sharepoint at all.

Do I have to redo everything?

SBS2003 SMTP Configuration

Hi, we have just taken over support of an SBS2003 server which is using the POP connector. They are having some delivery issues and we thought we should turn off the POP connector and go fully with smtp. Can someone clarify that these are the steps we need to take:

  1. Create MX record to point to the SBS static IP address
  2. Turn POP connector off

Is that all we need to do? Should we use DNS for mail routing or use a smarthost?

Thanks in advance

SBS 2003 migration to SBS 2011 - NTDS SDPROP error

Hi, I am trying to upgrade from SBS 2003 SP2 with Exchange sp2, to SBS 2011.

I prepared using: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg563799.aspx

I installed all updates (other then IE 8) and I've rebooted many times.

Download BPA v2 and this comes up with Error can't find "MyBusiness OU not found on Windows sbs sever"

This did already exist in AD Users & Computers with all sub groups (originally created by SBS install),

but I followed listed article 2578426, I renamed existing OU and created items again clean (using exact same case & structure as aritcle).

Ran 2011 migration wizard and it stops with same "MyBusiness OU not found" error and no other issuses / warnings.

The server has been running slow but the event logs are clean except when I run 2011 migration wizard, I get...

Directory Services Event ID: 1025 NTDS SDPROP Internal Processing

The security descriptor propagation task found an incorrect or missing object class for the following object.
Object:
CN={62FBB3C8-1E23-484C-BA5E-ABB3CC4AEA8B},CN=Policies,CN=System,DC=Nemco,DC=Local
Security descriptor propagation will not take place on this objects child objects.
Additional Data Error value: 20b3 The specified class is not defined.

I checked ADSI Edit and clicking on CN=Policies,CN=System,DC=Nemco,DC=Local

AdsiEdit says "An operations error occured" and item appears blank.

Does this related to Group policy ?  I have no group policy on MyBusiness OU

Please help, any ideas how to correct problem and move on with migration ?

Hello,

I have SBS 2008 installed on my server. Yesterday it installed updates, now I can't log in using my administrator account (It says wrong username and password) Iv made sure i am typing the correct domain user  and password. The only way I was able to log in with my credentials is trough SAFE Mode. The server is used as a Domain Controller, MS Exchange and Files and Printer Sharing. None of those process are working properly. I can access any of the mapped drives at users computer and Office is not connecting to MS Exchange. I appreciate any help you can give. Thanks.

Small Business Server 2011 Essentials resize system partition

the default system partition size is 60GB. With updates to the operating system alone, it has almost maxed out that space and I need to resize the partition. I've tried everything I can think of or read about on the internet but nothing will work because Windows won't let me do anything to the adjacent partition "Drive D" because it is in use. How can I figure out what is using it so I can resize this partition?

SBS 2008 - Reinstall SharePoint from a backup

$

Hi

I have an ongoing issue with SharePoint failing on SBS 2008 server. We can reinstall SharePoint from a backup but there a couple of potential problems bullet pointed for you convenience:

  • The SharePoint first suffered an issue when there was an attempt using the SBS wizard to move the databases which failed midway through the process. . The databases were successfully copied and moved to another disk manually and the site was working
  • Following an update a day later and little too much tinkering by a third party who installed a hotfix, the site has stopped working with all sorts of database related errors.
  • We have a backup from before the data base was moved, the update and the hotfix were installed. Our question is if we run a restore, the databases would be presumably returned to their original location. Would SharePoint understand this and if not, what steps do we take to return SharePoint to the default installation?

Many Thanks

Installing SBS 2011 Standard - lots of installation questions - did I choose the right product?

$

Background: We are a small yacht club that have been running SBS 2003 premium for over 5 years on a Dell server. Basically not a single issue, but the server is getting old so We ordered a new one, another Dell. Running might not the correct definition since we have basically not been using anything more then NT Server in SBS 2003. We only have 3 users + machines, and are primarily using the server as File and printer sharing, secure storage, multiuser accounting server app and log on security with a cartridge backup system (RD 1000). No user data on the users machines. Email is through the offsite Website provider, we use Outlook as a client for POP email. So we don't use Exchange, SQL, IIS, Sharepoint etc we are just to small for that...We have a wireless router, and a lot of members come in to the yacht club and access the net with their laptops and phones. We also have a little PC where people can check email etc. That PC is not joined to the domain, just accesses the Internet through the router through DHCP form the router. We have a webcam that is on a fixed IP and uses DynDNS so we can view it from anywhere..

So Why SBS 2003 and now 2011 Standard? Well I used to work at MS and got the first one for free, and the second one (2011) from the Company store for an advantageous price (we are just a small yacht club).

I would like to use remote access and remote management of the server with the new server if possible.

So here come the questions and predicaments:

After reading through the migration doc and realizing that it seemed to be much more work to fix all the short comings in the old SBS 2003 Server OS environment, it seemed much easier to me just to install a blank new fresh copy of SBS 2011 Standard and then add 3 users plus me the Admin and machine accounts and go, and the three shared folders we have(plus backup server accounting app etc. INstallation of it all went fine on the server.

But at the end of the installations I started getting cold feet over two issues:

  1. SBS 2011 want to take over the routers DHCP functionality, so if I do that then what happens then when people start dropping in to the club and try to access the Internet over wireless? And what about the little lounge PC that is not joined to the domain? and the webcam on a fixed IP?
  2. So what really happens when I connect a machine to the domain? the help file says it changes things on the user machine, adds a SBS group to the favourites, adds SBS agents, adds an internal email account (that we have no use for), changes the home page to an internal home page (Sharepoint?) (that we also have no use for).  Does it blow away the little data and settings that are on the users machines? What happens to the existing email connection settings and PST file? The existing favorites? a few files and shortcuts on the desktops (Windows XP pro BTW)? I obviously backed all machines up completely and made sure no one is working on them until I say so. The old server is still available and can be plugged back in at any time.

Did I choose the wrong product? We only really need basic server functionality. In that case which one?

As for me I obviously am not an expert at this, its a while ago since I installed SBS 2003, But I have a decent basic knowledge and can at least wonder what will happen before I do things and screw it up.

Help and insight would be very much appreciated

Problem in the middle of migration 2000 SBS SP4 -->2008 R2

$

Hi all,

When I went in company I found the following situation:

The environment consists of two DC`s , one Windows Small Business Server 2000 SP4 and Windows Server STD 2008 R2.

The AD was well prepared with adprep , before promotion of 2008 R2 as DC. I was able to find the adprep logs. The AD schema  is 47.

The current domain functional level is Windows 2000 native.

The FSMO roles are not transfered yet to the 2008 R2.

The company is not using exchange server and SQL Server too. They only want to retire old Machine with SBS 2000 installed.

The problem is:

The company want to use the WinSvr 2008 R2 as DC , RDS Server and Remote Desktop Licensing Server. They haved 2008 RDS Per User CALs.

But may be (fix me if i am wrong) because of  Administrator action in some stage of 2008 R2 DC promotion, the BUILTIN groups:

"Remote Desktop Users" and "Terminal Server License Servers " is missing , not present in AD !

Because FSMO roles not trasfered yet to the 2008 R2, can I demote 2008 R2 , and promote it again ?

Will such operation create these missing groups in AD ?

If not , what i have to do to fix this problem ?

Thanx in advance.

Where do I find the Group Policy Object that controls Windows Firewall on SBS 2008?

In the console, I have a security flag that says the Windows Firewall is turned off. If I go to Manage Settings I'm told that it's being controlled by Group Policy. There is a 'Default Settings' button on the Advanced tab, but I'm not sure what that will do, so I'm afraid to push it. I think I found the place where it's controlled, but I'd like some confirmation that I'm on the right track. Here's a screenshot of the GPO that I think I need to use:

Unable to extend volume on SBS 2008

$

I have a DELL server that came with 2 500GB drives which I configured as mirrors during my initial setup. I configured them as a C: System partition and a D: Data partition. Recently Disk 0 reported that it was getting ready to fail. Since I needed to replace the drive and wanted to add some storage space also, I ordered 2 1TB drives. I swapped the remaining healthy 500GB drive (Drive 1) with the failing drive and installed one of the TB drives. Then using DELL's Open Manage software rebuilt the mirror. After it was done rebuilding, I removed the 500GB drive and replaced it with the newly created 1TB mirror drive and then installed the second 1TB drive. I have not yet begun the process of rebuilding the mirror.

My issue is that I now need to extend the D: partition, but 'Extend volume...' is greyed out. In fact, it doesn't even show the unallocated space on Disk 0. I'm thinking that maybe I need to recreate the mirror before the unallocated space will show up, but as I'm inexperienced in this scenario I don't want to proceed until I'm sure of what I need to do. I've included a screenshot of my current state.

TIA!

Event ID 12317 on SBS installed without Active Directory

$

I inherited a server in this state.  It is a SBS 2011 server installed as a workgroup.  The end user did not want to use Exchange and did not want to upgrade all the computers from home edition to professional.  Users are having problems accessing the shares in a timely manner.  After a few days of running, it can take longer than 5 minutes to browse files on a share.  Event ID 12317 appears in the application log http://support.microsoft.com/kb/924035.  The documented remedy has to do with active directory, which they are not running.

So the question is if SBS 2011 can be used without Active Directory?  If yes, can I fix this without starting over?  If no, does that mean they have to purchase a license  and CALs for Windows Server Standard?

Thanks,

Tina

Inconsistent Disk Space reported

I'm running SBS 2011.  Disk partitioned in two sections, system section (C:) is 119GB, apps & data section 1.51TB.  My system partitiion is showing 100GB used (shown in "Computer" drive properties).  If I look at the space used (space on disk) by all the folders on C: as shown in folder properties, the total is 49GB.  I've got hidden folders set to display.  I know there has to be a reasonable explanation, but it's escaping me.  I would appreciate any thoughts.

can't add printers from SBS 2003 onto win 7 workstation??

Small client with 12 users and SBS 2003.  They are upgrading all the desktops first then upgrading the server once that's done (to save on costs).  They have various HP printers shared on the server, but whenever I try and install them it doesn't recognize the printe driver.

Printer is HP 4015 and the path to the driver is http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=3558881&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=3558793&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvOID=4063

I noticed that it doesn't use a specific driver and just gives me a "universal print driver for Windows PCL 6"  Does anyone know if specific printer drivers that work with SBS 2003 or if I have to go back and get vista drivers to print?

How to revert Exchange recipient redirection?

I have a client with Windows 2011 SBS. User has left organization, but account remained in AD. Email has been redirected to another user, by assigning email alias to new user. Now user come back to organization, and somehow user email has been restored, i.e. assigned back to original mailbox. However, email is still flowing to another user.

I checked everything, email addresses on mailboxes are correct, but still – somehow emails destined to original user are being received by another user. Not sure where to dig. Is there way to query exchange where user@company.com is forwarded?
