we're running SBS 2011 and recently ran the sharepoint service pack 1 update, I have run thePSConfig.exe -cmd upgrade -inplace b2b -force -cmd applicationcontent -install -cmd installfeatures” command, but it did not fix the windows backup problem. I issued the vssadmin list writers command :

SBS 2011 Standard backup retention problem

$

I have a SBS 2011 Standard, not Essentials, and the backup retention for the Server Backup to an internal HD is only 5 days though there is more than half the drive space still available.  I was under the impression that WSB will retain backups until the drive fills and then start removing the oldest backups.

I thought the 5 day retention was a policy in SBS 2011 Essentials, not Standard.  I see no way to configure the retention policy for SBS 2011 Standard.

5 days of backups isn't enough.  I need to configure it to retain backups until the drive is full.  Anyone know how to go about changing the retention policy for SBS 2011 Standard's Windows Server Backup?

All users get 550 5.7.1 errors on sending through SMTP except me???

This has me pulling my hair out - trying to get SMTP working for my users who are still quite happy using archaic programs like Eudora (including myself). But everyone seems to be getting unable to relay errors when they try to send mail to external addresses. Except, strangely, for myself, which is why I'm only just finding out about it despite our server going "live" yesterday.

Because we're using Eudora going back to version 6.2 (where SSL didn't work very well) AND to avoid me having to change numerous workstation email clients to now use SSL, I was trying to go without using it. And I'm using the default send connector built into Exchange, which appears to be properly configured.

FWIW, it seems like I can no longer get the Connect to the Internet Wizard to run and, therefore, cannot get the Internet Address Wizard to run either. So bypassing these would be helpful right now, instead of getting bogged down in trying to get those working first. I did run them when I first brought the server online and nothing has changed there. The only address to change was that of the firewall external address when I took the setup from test-bed to production.

Otherwise, everything on the box seems to be working well, with the exception of some of the defualt policies that are more restrictive than I'm happy with.

Windows SBS Console Home Tab shows Yellow for Updates when none are needed.

Windows SBS Console Home Tab shows Yellow for Updates when none are needed.  When I click on the Go to Updates link to check for the reason, it shows:
- No updates with License Terms are available for deployment.
- There were no errors in deploying the updates.
- No optional updates are available for deployment.
- No updates are in progress.

I did a synchronize because there wasn't anything left to try, but it didn't change a thing.  How do I get the Home tab Summary to accurately reflect the update status?

Migrating from SBS 2003 to SBS 2011 or other Windows Server

We have an SBS 2003 domain with 25 user an SBS 2003 server and a windows server 2003 as a member server. Need to upgrade the SBS system and looking for suggestions. We use Sharepoint 3.0, WSUS and Exchange. Our exchange mail is only for local mail and a repository for all workstation mailboxes. All user have to Email account one for Gmail Buisness and one for exchange all email stored in exchange mailbox. One of the main reason for using exchange this way is if we are having Exchange issues all out side mail is still deliverd to users we like using the internal mail for sending faxes that come into our copier to local mailboxes instead of sending them to external mailboxes. It is my understanding that you cannot setup SBS 2011 exchange in this manner do to Auto discovery so if we went with SBS 2011 with exchange we would have to change our email proceess and host both internal and external mail. The other option is to go with windows server 2012 dont use exchange backup pst files from workstation and add or pay to have hosted Sharepoint. Please give me any suggestions.

Companyweb not loading on some workstations. sbs2008

http://companyweb/default.aspx does load up fine.  On workstations where there seem to be no problems companyweb is being forwarded to an external site. https://sbs.[domain].com:987/default.aspx

It seems to have started after turning on outlook anywhere.  There was a problem then with exchange and sharepoint fighting over an authentication method.  I sorted those problems out, but fear I've done this.

Fix my network doesn't fix this, but does always show an error "A networking component is not configured properly.(Component ID 3)"

For more information see http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=120178.

Recover Companyweb after Sharepoint installation on SBS 2011

Dear forum users,

In our company someone installed SharePoint 2010 on a SBS 2011 server. But that's not necessary because there is an default SBS companyweb / SharePoint page. Sharepoint now grabs port 80. Because of SharePoint grabbing port 80 no other services work. In example OWA etc. I configured have SharePoint on port 81 via ISS manager so the default features work again but I would like to restore companyweb. I would like to run the companyweb / SharePoint on the default port 80. The installation of SharePoint deleted all the default settings of companyweb. Is there a way of restoring the companyweb?

Thanks in advance.

Sorry for my bad english.

SBS 2011 Exchange 2010 database may be corrupt following unexpected shutdown

Hi All,

OK, situation is - SBS 2011 Exchange 2010 database may be corrupt following several unexpected shutdowns.

Repeated frequent power outages during a storm resulted in an SBS 2011 server at a company crashing off several times due to UPS batteries being expended and not providing continued protection.

Server is now up and running seemingly OK. All seems to be working.

But Backup Exec is report that the backup has failed due to a corrupotion in the Exchange Mailbox database which it can't verify ?

What's the best way to start investigating this ?

Am I looking to run a tool or a script to check the Exchange Mailbox database integrity to verify what Backup Exec is telling me ?

I don't want to launch into a full database restore if I don't need to.

Mike.

as long as i can see the update 7.6 for Windows Update Agent failed, so 7.4 is still active (in some way) but cant be updated.

after a lot off goggle this is what i tried:

  • rename the SoftwareDistribution Folder
  • reinstalled WSUS ... WSUS was working and works perfect again after the reinstall, all clients connect without a problem
  • tried to manual install the Agent 7.4 because i didnt found a installer for 7.6 ... regarding to MS there is no package so far ... didnt work out, the installer stops with a error

Verizon FIOS and alternate smart host port

I am

trying to configure outgoing email on an SBS2011 test server.  I use a smart host (No-Ip.com) which requires use of non-standard port 3325 for their service.  My ISP is Verizon FIOS and they are very clear that they block port 25. ("Outbound port 25 blocking will be applied to FIOS and High Speed Internet services that use dynamic IP addresses. If you subscribe to a static IP address service, you will not be affected.")  I have a dynamic IP address.  One of the recent posts on this forum (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/smallbusinessserver/thread/080c60fd-f787-4841-9070-f855b061029f) indicated that SBS 2011 Exchange requires port 25 to be open in both directions, even if you override the port in the smarthost.

Do you know if it is possible to use a smart host which requires a port other than port 25 with Verizon FIOS?  Or am I just wasting my time and should consider getting a business account at Verizon (sort of overkill for my test which is based in my house)?

What point to uninstall exchange from sbs 2003

$

I was wondering at what point is uninstalling exchange from sbs2003 correct when migrating a domain to a new domain controller running 2008 R2 Standard? Would this have to be done before the 1st replication from the SBS which would still have all of the FSMO roles? Or could exchange be uninstalled after the 2008 R2 box has been added as a member domian controller and AD has already been replicated to it?

I'm just wondering if uninstalling exchange after the migration but before demoting the SBS would effectively "clean up" AD of old exchange artifacts for me. Our email is hosted and we will not be utilizing exchange in the future but if we ever do I want to be able to install it again without issues.

Thanks,

JJ

SBS 2008 Native Backup takes 6.5 hours to run every night, even though incremental is chosen.

Happy New Year Everyone!

I have an SBS 2008 server where for quite a while the backups have been taking an inordinate amount of time to complete (over 6 hours).  I am using the built in SBS backup through the console, the total amount of data being backed up is about 465 GB, and the backup is being sent to an external USB (2.0) drive.

Initially, I was having some random backup failures generating error failed with following error code ''2147942402'', I also got the following event errors:

Event Details:
The shadow copies of volume C: were deleted because the shadow copy storage could not grow in time. Consider reducing the IO load on the system or choose a shadow copy storage volume that is not being shadow copied.

Fearing the External Drive was having problems, I replaced the drive.  Since that time the backups have been successful but taking a very long time to complete.  To investigate further, I went to the management console to check the backup settings, incremental is enabled, however it appears a full backup is occurring every night regardless of settings.

The next action I took was to delete the backup altogether and re-set it up.  I understand that that the first backup is a full backup however the subsequent ones also appear to be full backups as well.  Backup is scheduled for 10:00 pm, finishes at 4:30 am.  Server is a Dell poweredge T310 with 16 GB memory.  The server also has all updates.  I have run both BPA for both sbs and exchange without any critical errors.

I have already searched this topic and have not come up with applicable information.  I just wanted to check if anyone may have some ideas or similar experience.

Thank you!

SBS 2011 Premium Add-On Installation on Same Server as Existing SBS 2011 Standard

$

Hi,

I've recently finished upgrading our server from SBS 2003 to SBS 2011 Standard.

Now we are looking to deploy the SBS 2011 Premium Add-On for the SQL server support and I need advice on how to go about doing this. Firstly, I've not setup virtual servers like this before, so if anyone can reference good reading material then it would be greatly appreciated.

As far as I am aware, SBS 2011 Standard cannot be used for Hyper-V and, therefore, cannot be the primary OS. So I would have to install SBS 2008 R2 and set it as the main OS. Then setup two virtual servers using Hyper-V and install SBS 2011 Standard and the Premium Would it be possible to retain the existing SBS 2011 Standard installation along with all of its files? Or would it require a fresh installation?

Basically, I'm looking for a way to setup the premium add-on without having to rebuild the SBS 2011 standard installation from scratch.

Kind Regards,

Peter Scott

Add trusted certificate on SBS 2011

I am migrating from SBS 2008 to SBS 2011. I exported my trusted certificate on SBS 2008 and imported it on SBS 2011. But when I run the Add Trusted certificate wizard on SBS 2011 to select the certificate, the wizard crashes and I cannot select the certificate. Has somebody had the same experience? And are there any workarounds or solutions to this problem.

Locked out!

Good Day,

I posted this question on the Microsoft Community and it was suggested I post here also.  I am trying to use this laptop in my home.  I am running a D-Link wireless router and was able initially to connect to the internet and my email.  Now I am unable to login.

This laptop was given to me by a friend who used to have it in their medical office.  It appears to have been set up initially as part of a domain called brmg.  When I first booted the computer, there was a user name and password already set up and I was able to log on.  Unfortunately, no matter what I tried, I was not able to set up a new user account, nor was I able to change the existing user account and password.  I kept getting error messages such as "A local policy does not allow you to log in interactively".  I was able to connect to my wireless router and the internet but that was about all.  Somehow, I managed to delete or damage the existing login info and now I cannot log in at all.  The original password does not work and I cannot substitute Administrator or any other user name or password.
That is really all I can tell you for now and I would appreciate any help you can give.
Thank you,
Dave Olive

Windows Server Backup - failing

SBS2008 SP2

External 2 TB USB disk drive -> backup device

My daily backup is failing. I removed the USB drive and mounted on another system and it gave drive letter and could open folders. Remounted on SBS2008 server

I open system-> manage-> Disk management and saw the external USB drive but it dos have a drive letter assigned to it.

I reran Server backup wizard from SBS console and it saw the external drive and I just changed the daily time. It ran to completion.

Last night I got another failed backup. Details are Creation of the shared protection point timed out.

What is occurring and how do I fix it? It was working for some time.
