Windows Essential Business Server Decomission

$

I have a client that is running Windows Essential Business Server 2008.  I have no experience with this product and very little with Small Business Server but I would like to migrate them off of the Business Essentials and just get them on Windows 2008 R2 Standard.

This is a pretty small shop.  Three locations, single domain, three domain controllers, maybe 100 users.

Are there any special steps required to remove, decommission or migrate this domain to a standard Windows 2008 R2 domain?

Thank you.

I forgot to delete the old folder redirection GPO off of SBS 2003 during a migration to SBS 2011. Now What???

Hello

I did a SBS 2003 migration to SBS2011. The migration went well. But now folder redirection is not working. I forgot to delete the old folder redirection GPO off of SBS 2003 during the migration. The GPO was transferred over to the new SBS 2011 server. I deleted it and recreated a new folder redirection GPO from scratch and it still does not work.

I ran GPO inventory on the server  and queried RSOP folder redirection and found that it still points to the old SBS03 server. That server is powered off and is not on the network.  I ran gpupdate /force on the workstation and the GPO does not want to update.

Any thoughts on getting this issue resolved?

"Unexpected error" when trying to create a mailbox using add new user wizard (sbs 2011 std)

Hi!

When I'm trying to create a new user with the add new user wizard in the sbs 2011 standard console, it stops at the mailbox stage with an unexpected error.

Both Server and Exchange BPA(s) looks fine.

2008 won't boot from secondary mirror plex

The server has an odd history which explains the current odd setup, so don't get hung up on that part.

Config:
SBS2008, all drives connected to a hardware RAID controller. Two drives are configured as a hardware mirror, and the third drive is configured as a non-RAID drive on the same controller. In Windows the "two" drives are configured as a software mirror. So yes, this is kind of a three-disk hardware and software mirror. We don't want to keep it this way. The non-RAID drive was/is the original boot drive.

Goal:
Break the software mirror and physically remove the non-RAID drive, so that the server is running only on the two drives in the hardware mirror.

Problem:
I pulled the single original drive and the system would not boot, couldn't even get the F8 boot menu. Startup Repair doesn't even recognize that Windows is on the drive (yes, BIOS order is correct and RAID drivers installed ;-). I played around with diskpart to break the mirror, set the C partition as active, etc... but all I managed to do was hose the config on that drive and was nowhere closer to getting the system to boot. I took a deep breath and just reconnected the original non-RAD drive and booted the system with that and re-synced the second drive. Back to original functioning config now.

Rant:
What the heck is the point of a software mirror if the system won't boot from the secondary plex automatically on primary failure!!! This is SBS2008, not NT5! Grr.

With that out of the way I appreciate any suggesitons on how to proceed from here to ensure that the system will boot to the secondary plex and the software mirror is broken. Thansk!

An internal transport certificate will expire soon - thumbprint ****, hour remaining xxx

Good evening,

To be forwarned, I haven't set this SBS up, I'm just managing it. Sadly there are a lot of strange things going on on this server, but I just have to deal with it for the time beeing. ;-)

The following message started to show up in the event log:
"An internal transport certificate will expire soon - thumbprint ****, hour remaining xxx"

Strangely, I cannot fix this with the "Fix my Network" Link in the SBS Console, as there is "no expired / or soon to expire"-certificate listed. The only certificate I can see there is an "corrupt or not existing" certificate, which I ignored.

Could it be that this certificate is not in use anyways? If so, I could ignore this, but is there a way to make sure that this is not in use? It would be very bad if the mail flow would stop for this customer.

On the other hand, what steps are needed to refresh this certificate via shell?

Thanks in advance,
Christof

Uninstall Active Directory

I bought Windows Server 2012 Essentials thinking it would be easy to setup.  I did not know it was going to install active directory by default.  I am replacing an older server with a new one and it does not need active directory, it just uses a workgroup setup with file shares.  This is for a very small company with 8 users.

I went to uninstall the active directory throught the Server Manager but all of the check boxes are grayed out and I am login as the Administrator.

Can I get rid of Active Directory in this server version?

I like this new server software because of its user backup and VPN built-in features but did not know that I would be stuck with active directory, the client does not want or need to login to the server, mainly to share folders and access scans from there scanner.

I also have a text mode in the lower right hand, I guess since I had to use a un-signed drive it puts this message there, how can I remove this?

DCPromo fails also on my Migration from 2003 to 2011

My Migration stops also at dcpromo, Code 53, Server renamed needs to be rebootet.

I found my problem is at my 2003DNS:

it doesn´t resolve ´sbs2003´on LAN with tracert, ´sbs2003.mydomain.local´ will resolve.

I tried some fixes for this problem, deleting ´_msdcs.mydomain.local´, ipconfig /registerdns, stop+restart netlogon service,

adding wins to my sbs2011 candidate, and change tcp/ip settings to adding netbios over tcpip,

but there is no change. ping sbs2003 works, tracert sbs2003 from sbs2003 works, from LAN, server is not found.

How can I fix this DNS Problem, to go one with my migration?

Best regards
Wolfgang

Small Business Server 2011 network components stop working

This is really starting to piss me off.

Deployed a new SBS2011 server using ESXi 5.1 and the system is quick, the OS itself is stable, but it absolutely refuses to work correctly when it comes to the remote network.

What I mean by this is that I connect over the VPN fine and work with it for 2+ hours at a time, and disconnect, but when I go to use it again after 20 minutes or overnight, the damn thing has stopped responding to connection attempts, and everyone at the site is unable to browse the internet.

I have already applied the DNS fix through the registry, I've pointed the DNS pointer to the router (which then goes to OpenDNS) but the stupid thing is STILL breaking on me!

I run SBS2008 here at home and it's NEVER given me these issues!  The customer opens for business tomorrow and the network has turned into a pile of mush.  What the heck is going on here?

The ONLY thing that brings it back is to reboot the SBS2011 server.  This is UNACCEPTABLE.

SBS 2011 Essentials - reboot of server causes connector software on client workstations to crash; normal?

Fairly new to SBS...we migrated from Server 2003 (changed hardware so no upgrade, just a complete replacement). It is primarily a file server, with some shared folders and it runs a couple of third-party database installs (Act by Sage, Sage 50 Accounting)...no email server or anything else complex at all...

I followed the fairly simple steps of adding client machines through the connector software. All client machines are connected and find. Our network is now a DOMAIN style, no longer a workgroup style.

Just like the title suggests, when the server is rebooted, on some machines, the connector software crashes (LANconfigsvc.exe in application event viewer), and  sometimes DNS settings are reset on the client. That is to say, the primary DNS is deleted on the workstation from being the static IP of the SBS server, and replaced with blanks.

This does not happen to ALL machines, only some. The percentage of machines this affects is random.

Is this normal? Can someone tell me what the proper procedure should be when rebooting a SBS 2011 Essentials server in a DOMAIN setting? Is it possible I have to reboot all client workstations as well as a rule?

Want: Local Exchange and Automated Client Backups

Man it's hard to find some information sometimes.  Please help....

I want (1) local Exchange, (2) client backups (like in WHS).

For a local Exchange server, I think I'm limited to either SBS 2011 Standard or an self setup Exchange+Server.  For automated client backups, it seems to be only in Windows Home Server and Server Essentials 2012 ... but neither WHS nor SE2012 will coexist happily with SBS11 Standard  (right?)

I don't understand why client backups aren't a standard part of Server.  Don't you need to backup client PCs?

SBS 2011 how to easily map server folder to drives for user computers

Hi

I need to map server folders to users so that folders show as different drives.

I know a way to manage this by startup script but I somehow has this idea that it should be easier in SBS 2011 by group policy or some other way. Are there some other way than to make script and deploy it by group policy?

SBS 2008 to 2011 Migration - "Connect to the internet" error

$

Hi

Im about to finish the migration
Connect to the Internet wizard – get the error

to remote server {destserver} failed with the following error message : The WinRM client cannot process the request. The WinRM client tried to use Negotiate authentication mechanism, but the destination computer ({destserver}:80) returned an 'access denied' error. Change the configuration to allow Negotiate authentication mechanism to be used or specify one of the authentication mechanisms supported by the server. To use Kerberos, specify the local computer name as the remote destination. Also verify that the client computer and the destination computer are joined to a domain. To use Basic, specify the local computer name as the remote destination, specify Basic authentication and provide user name and password. Possible authentication mechanisms reported by server: For more information, see the about_Remote_Troubleshooting Help topic.

I have found this KB http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2501155(preview)
However in AD U&C "Domain Admin" group is already listed – and I can open EMC and EMS successfully?

Running the Fix my network wizard comes out with the same issue (that it cant access exchange management shell)?

Also

C:\Windows\system32> Winrm get winrm/config/client/auth
Auth
Basic = true
Digest = true
Kerberos = true
Negotiate = true
Certificate = true
CredSSP = false

Fix my network has the same error plus "could not configure router" – Sonicwall NSA 240 and all required ports are open and tested

Smarthost for internet e-mail (Configure Internet Mail)also reports "The internet send connector for the exchange server cannot retrieve the information for the smart host server"

I have removed the imported certificate (no help),
Been in and out of EMC – just tried again and got a kerberos error but managed to connect when pressing retry?
In EMC there is one send connector – "Windows SBS Internet Send "DestServer" – "Use DNS MX records" is ticked.
Exchange BPA didnt pick up anything unusual in the dest server.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks

Help, I've messed up Folder redirection

$

SBS 2011 Standard, I tried to enable folder redirection.  Out of 5 win7pro and 3 XPpro computers, only 2 win7 and 1 XP computer/user were sucessful.  In trying to get the other computers/users working, and searching posts on this, I tried various permission settings.  Unfortunelty, due to a post somewhere that I probably should not have believed, I also tried changing permissions on the User folder, not just the redirected folders subfolder.  I think I've got permissions pretty messed up.

(after backing up desktop/my doc's folders on the client computers that worked), I disabled Redirected Folders in the SBS console, and thinking to start fresh, I deleted the three user folders & subfolders from the User folder on the SBS.  After trying various permissions and rebooting several times (SBS and clients) now only one user folder was recreated and seems to be working as I would expect, which is my account, which has Domain Admin rights.  Now the other two that *were* working have not recreated their user folders on the SBS.

I need to set permissions correctly, but it seems that I'm missing something, for example, an instruction might say "set the following persmissions...." but it doesn't say whether it is for this folder only, or all subfolders also.

If someone could provide a link that tells exactly what I need, that would be much appreciated.  Or, at least, could someone tell me what permissions the User folder needs to have, then I could at least elimanate the User folder as the problem.

One other question, when I had the 3 (2 win7 & 1 xp) working, looking in windows explorer, there was a padlock (I guess) on my username, but not on the other two, any idea why?

Thanks, Steve

Cant create migration batch for exchange 2007 (SBS 2008) to Office 365

I am trying to migrate my mail from SBS 2008 with Exchange 2007 to Office 365 E1

I have followed all the of the migration steps from help.outlook.com/en-US/140/ms.exch.ecp.emailmigrationwizardexchangelearnmore.aspx

I am running outlook anywhere and can connect outside my network to it to check mail

I am running RPC over HTTP and am able to telnet to it from outside my network

However i still get errors failing. I have my primary domain a record pointed at a web server and the mx records point to my exchange server.

I ran the connectivity test and got the following error:

An HTTP 401 unauthorized response was received from the remote unknown server. This is usually the result of an incorrect username or password. If you are attempting to log on to an Office 365 service ensure you are using your Full User Principle name (UPN)

I am using the same username and account that i use when i log on to test outlook anywhere.

Sharepoint 3.0 not working on SBS 2008

For the last five weeks sharepoint has been down, when anyone trys to access http://companyweb/ all that is shown is a message saying "Cannot connect to the configuration database".

IIS seems to be running fine and pointing to the right place and I restarted the websites and services and that didn't fix it.

We have tryed these steps:

http://blogs.technet.com/b/sbs/archive/2009/05/06/companyweb-inaccessible-after-sharepoint-3-0-service-pack-2.aspx

and we have tryed using psconfig "-cmd upgrade -inplace b2b -wait -force" that has not done anything. Have also done an application restore on sharepoint.

Is there any other fixes?

Any help with this problem would be much appreciated.

Sharepoint upgrade will not run. The conguration tool fails with the error: Failed To Start database service MSSQL$Microsoft##SSEE.

Hi all, I have run into an issue trying to upgrade SBS2003 to SBS2011. It is to do with the Sharepoint upgrade. My client relies on exchange and sharepoint so deletion or loss of the existing Sharepoint dbase is not acceptable.

So to the symptoms:

Followed the instuctions on the SBS7_Migration2003.doc

p51. Install Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Service Pack 2 on the Source Server = Succesfull

p52. Configure Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 on the Source Server

1.Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Products and Technologies Wizard does not start automatically, clickStart, click All Programs, click Administrative Tools, and clickSharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard to launch the wizard.

2.On the Welcome to SharePoint Products and Technologies page, clickNext.  = Fails on Step 2 of Configuration wizard with error: Failed To Start database service MSSQL$Microsoft##SSEE. Repair this product by sellecting it from the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS menu

I have attempted to resolve this issue by following advice on other posts. Changing the server type in the registry; running psconfig -cmd upgrade -inplace b2b

Nothing seems to work. I have spent a day on this issue and am struggling.

Does anyone have a solution? Many thanks in adavnce.

SBS 2011 - Unexpected Error Occurred when Adding a New User Account in Console

When I add a new user account in the SBS 2011 console - a yellow exclamation mark appears next to 'setting up an email account for...' When I click on View Error Details it says Unexpected Error Occurred.

I have installed and ran Windows Server Solutions Best Practices Analyzer – but there are no errors.

Anyone have any recommendations or which log files to check?

FYI – after the installation of SBS 2011 – SQL 2008 R2 Enterprise was installed. I am not sure this is the cause but there were no errors during the installation.

Problems with RRAS NAT not allowing HTTP traffic through to IIS

Hi,

I had to re-install our server recently and dont really have any experience with these things.

So what we have on the server is DNS, DHCP , RRAS and IIS.

We host our company website and some test websites on there.

So i got the DHCP and DNS working but as soon as i enable the RRAS i can not access our websites any more.

I think it might be the NAT that is blocking it but i honestly just do not have the knowledge to be certain.

We also have 2 nic on there one for the internet and the other for the internal network.

Please if anyone can help i would appreciate alot.

"Online - Unable to query the information for this computer" on one XP computer which suffered a corrupted profile

$

On our SBS2008 network, one of our XP clients (mine!) suffered a corrupted profile a couple of weeks back. Since then I have been working with the new profile that was generated automatically by the client PC. The client works fine on the network for emails, connecting to public folders, connecting to network shares, etc, but I cannot logon to it externally using Remote Web Workplace, and other client PCs in the same domain cannot connect to the rogue client PC using Remote Desktop Connection. When I check the status of the client PC on the server, I get the "Online - Unable to query the information for this computer" message.  The client PC is correctly listed in AD/MyBusiness/Computers/SBSComputers (and dsquery computers), but I notice that the server is not listed in either SBS Computers or SBSServers (does this matter?). The status of all other client PCs is "online".  DHCP and DNS appear clean and correct, except that the client cannot be pinged on the IP address given in the list of DHCP address leases.  'arp' gives the correct MAC on that IP address. 'net view' includes the client in its list, but 'net view\\client' gives a System Error 53 - network path not found' error.  I'm over my gumboots, help please!
