Forgive me for cross posting I thought it might gain more exposure here..

Have a client with a small company who has bought SBS 2011 Essentials and done most of the install himself, Ive helped him out with some of the Exchange stuff, he's migrated mail from SBS 2003 to Cloud 365, but basically he's got there on his own.

He's been and purchased five external USB drives to use for backup purposes, he's planning on rotating them on a Monday to Friday basis.

But says he can't work out how to do this. He says it appears that SBS 2011 Essentials is only expecting you to have one drive.

Personally I'm still using tape streamers as I find USB experience indifferent at best.

So, what's is the official line regards backing up to External USB drives in SBS backup or Windows Server backup if you want to change the drive over each day in order to maintain off site backup for disaster recovery purposes ? ie four drives offsite and one drive onsite.

Are you *supposed* to be able to do this or not ?  I've had a quick look and it seems that this isnt as straightforward as you would imagine.

I told his to get a streamer, but SBS 2011 doesn't support tape as far as I can see.

We have are running Small Business Server 2008 with Exchange 2007. Our firm needs to have a look at email encryption. This is a relatively new concept that we are dealing with, we are a bit confused with how it works.

Can the email encryption be set up on the SBS server? Or do we need to get 3rd party software installed onto the server?

The emails need to be encrypted that go out of the office, our clients have a variety of email programs that they use.

I am having trouble finding support for my SBS based business network. Easy to find Windows Server support, but the SBS version has fewer support options. I am running SBS 2003.  Is there a resource to locate SBS support specialists, preferably company based, with insurance, referrals, etc.?

i have recently created an image from my old hardware and restored to new hardware- SBS 2008

now that the recovery is complete to the new hardware it is asking me to activate windows

when I attempt to enter the product key I get "this product key is already in use by another machine"-something like that

so I have a product key and this product is licensed through volume licensing.

any advice on how to proceed?

In our company we have Windows Small Business Server 2011 Standard. We have 22 workstations in domain with XP, Vista, Windows 7 operating systems. I need answer to this question: Can SBS 2011 support operating systems for client computers: Windows 8.1 and Windows 10? We have to plan finances for next year and this is main issue. I know that windows 10 is not released yet, but in 2015 we plan to buy new Microsoft OS.

I am trying to create an initial backup of a brand new SBS2008 server - full backup to a USB drive.  The drive is recognized by the system as well as the backup wizard.  However, when the wizard begins formatting the drive for use, it eventually fails with the error:  unknown error (0x8004245f)

Nothing in the event logs and I can't seem to find this issue anywhere else on the web except with some Vista and Win7 installs but it appears to be an issue with partitioning/formatting (which makes sense).  I have tried wiping all partitions from the drive and letting it do things from scratch with no luck - from Disk Manager it does appear to create a partition, but it is not formatted.

Please help!

My laptop (Lenovo Amd athlonII P360 dual-core processor) with OS windows 7 shutdown accidentally during updates. From then on I could log in to my system but it keeps popping up some error messages like....

My chrome browser stopped working...it opens but when I type any url...it just stays inactive...nothing happens

Even I'm unable to uninstall chrome through control panel. Nothing happens. I'm writing this through mozilla firefox. And even i cant update this browser. It says firefoxInstalle.exe---ordinal not found.

It always gives install update notification but when i try to install updates...it says failure to configure windows updates. reverting changes...

so far i tried sfc /scannow, restore points, safe mode, iertutil.dll file exists in c:/windows/system32...etc,.

I appreciate any solution on how to fix this problem and what is causing it?

Hi,

got an 2011 SBS Essentials server here with some problems on RWA and RDC to clients.

I can connect to the RWA site using xxxxx.remotewebaccess.com which was set up through Microsoft free domain/ssl service.

When further trying to connect to a client selected from the Computer list I get this error message.

"This computer can't verify the identity of the RD Gateway "server-name". It's not safe to connect to servers that can't be identified. Contact your network admin for assistant".

After selecting OK RDC closes.

At one time this was working till someone messed around with .Net which also broke the RWA site itself but that's fixed now.

We always used the xxxxx.remotewebaccess.com URL and the SSL supplied which was automatically installed on the server. Other than that we never purchased and SSL for the server.

Help.

Hi All

I get the following error when viewing a contacts free/busy information in the OWA 2010 address book.

Outlook 2010 clients cannot view contacts free/busy information either. There's a "not connected" error on the client.

This issue started after a service pack or update was applied. Which one I don't know as it was done by another admin.

Has anyone seen this error before or does anyone know what this error is pointing to?

I have customers who have been very pleased with their sbs 2008 to 2011. 2012 comes out missing the key features they need which is all the in house exchange features. I have setup 1 2012 server and the cloud and with their internet speed 6 mbps which is the fastest they can get and the fact it goes down when they need it most, it has created a nightmare for the customer and no solution except to put SBS 2011 on their system. This is similar to Dish Network saying everyone in this day and age has a landline and most of my customers have a cell phone in their home instead of a landline. I believe that sbs should return. To serve the small businesses not in the city. It was hard for me to prove that Servers were a good solution and now I have 3 user SBS networks out there and the customers are amazed at what they can accomplish in house even while their internet is down, and when it is up their emails go out, and new ones come in with out them having to deal with it. So if you can tell me how to make these customers happy then I will move on to 2012 server, otherwise you are putting to much faith in Internet providers that are even starting to throttle their network speed after so much usage... The cloud will not be viable till a guarantee of service is put on the internet.

We have a SBS Server 2011 and were Always able to create backups with external harddisks. However, we have purchased several WD MyBook 3TB disks and now the backup does not work anymore because of i/o error on external device. We can see the harddisk, we can format the harddisk, we can copy data to the harddisk, but when used in a backup we get an error. We hope to solve this problem asap because we don't make backups now since the old (2TB) disks are already replaced by there because of bad blocks.

we have sbs 2011 with exchange and sharepoint service 3.0. we also has Symantec mail security and Symantec endpoint management console. Recently it is very slow. We need to wait several minutes to respond if we click mouse. We are using Lenovo two e5-2620 with 2 ssd Samsung evo 840 pro (raid1) 256gb to install operating system. memory is 24gb. We use lsi raid controller. Raid controller show different ip address of this server ip address that is very strange. We check server hardware and software. It seems fine. exchange uses a lot of memory, it never like this time. It is not always happen. It is about 10 minutes after you use the server. anyone has same experience and good solutions. Really appreciate it.

Hi there,

My SBS2011 POP3 connector will not connect to my POP server and download my email.

Below is the error log from the POP3SERVICE log.

I have performed the following steps to try and resolve this issue:

• I have confirmed the mail user name and passwords are correct by both resetting the password on the POP server and inputting them in the POP connector and then logging on to the web front end to confirm I can log in.
• I have performed an NSLOOKUP on the server to the POP server and it returns the correct IP of the POP server.
• I have turned off the firewall on both the server and the firewall on the router
• Ensured the ports 110, 25 and 995 are forwarded to the server on the router
• Made sure the SBS NIC DNS is pointing to the SBS's own address
• Set up two forwarders to both of google's DNS servers 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

Hi

SBS 2011 std.

I have moved SharePoint data using sbs standard console to another drive from D: drive. However I am still left with D:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50.SHAREPOINT\MSSQL\DATA\ with one file MS_AgentSigningCertificate.cer in it. How do I move this file to new drive as well?

Hi

SBS 2011 sd.

I have moved both Exchange db and log files to a different drive from D: drive however folder D:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\Mailbox\Mailbox Database\CatalogData-24d51bbf-20f8-4b97-94c8-fef5027b336d-16c8cf73-fed3-4254-a7ed-61c04f04dd64 still exists with several files in it. How can I get rid of this folder and its content?

Hi

SBS 2011 std.

I have added a new drive G: to the sever. Now when I run the Backup Schedule wizard without making any changes, as Full Server backup is already selected, to add the drive G: to backup I get the error; the filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.

How can I add the new disk G: to the backup set without making any other changes to full server backup at 23:00?

We have a client that needs to migrate their SBS2011 server to 2012 R2 Datacenter servers.  We will need to migrate Exchange and AD as well as the VPN/RRAS, RWA, IIS?, CA, and file/print shares.  Essentially every role that SBS2011 offers will need to be migrated to HyperV guests running 2012 R2 datacenter. 

Are there guides specifically related to each task, or perhaps a general guide for the entire process?

Hi there

Help please.....

My client has a SBS 2008 server, which comes up with the following BSOD....

stop: C00002e2 directory services could not start because of the following:

A device attached to the system is not functioning.

Error status:0xc0000001.

Please shutdown this system and reboot into directory services restore mode

Check the event log for more detailed information.

When we then try and boot into "directory services" nothing works.

Booting from the SBS Install disk, going to the command prompt, we can see the SAM database file under.....\\Windows\System32\config.

Third party "password reset software" does not see the database.

Browsing the HDD in another PC..no problem...All data etc can be viewed.

Unfortunately, no backup of the system state exists.

Any suggestions as to how we can overcome this problem will be highly appreciated.

Hello,

I have a client that is running Windows SBS 2003.  The c drive is constantly low on space, until finally there was nothing left to remove application wise or data files.  I am migrating them to Windows 2012 Server R2 while trying to bandage the current system.

Finally the machine crashed and it seems that the services were all corrupted and the system wouldn't start correctly. No services would start.  Is this typical behavior of Windows 2003 SBS if resources are depleted?  I was told that the SBS systems were very finicky and you can't add other appl's to your system while running this software.

Any thoughts?
