On May 12th I ran the Migration Preparation Tool on the source server. After resolving any/all BPA/other identified issues.
On the 14 May 2011 we attempted to migrate SBS 2003 to SBS 2008. The migration failed at the SEIZE FSMO roles. We then DCPROMO'd the SBS 2008 box and removed it from the domain (joined a workgroup). Then performed a metadata cleanup.
We worked with MS Support and confirmed that the countdown (21) day timer had not begun as the Migration had not actually completed (almost though) far enough to engage the countdown.
I have resolved the issue that previously prevented us from migrating (AD Issue). Link to resolution and previous issue post here:
ON JUNE 3rd--IN A NON-PRODUCTION LAB: I have begun the migration again - In my lab- using a backup from May 30th.
When launching the Migration Wizard on the destination server I received an error:
X Run the migration Preparation tool on the source server
Either you did not run the migration preparation tool on the source server, or you did not start the migration within the allowable time frame.
Based on the fact that there never was an SBCore 1011 event logged, I believe that the 21 day countdown had not been initiated.
I re-ran the Migration prep Wizard on the Source server. Rebooted the source server. Then clicked retry on the destination server migration screen. The Migration wizard continued and completed successfully.
*I also found reference that if you don't start the migration within 14 days, you will receive this error and need to re-run the migration preparation wizard. (This reference may have specifically mentioned SBS 2003>2011 migration).
I have since advanced to page 44 in the sbs 2003 > 2008 migration guide (Just finshed moving mailboxes).
Researching the countdown timer initiation on the inet returns -that it doesn't begin until the FSMO roles are transferred.
- I am trying to verify the actual Migration Countdown days remaining.
Is this possible in a SBS 2003 > SBS 2008 migration?
