I have a customer that currently runs SBS 2011. They wish to add another server computer that will be used solely to run application software. It would be nice if the app server can also function as a sort of backup domain controller (BDC). This is just in case of issues with the SBS 2011 server. It would also be nice to provide backup for DNS under the same scenario on this new computer. Both the SBS computer and the new computer will be in the same domain.
I have looked for an answer, but most of the things I've seen all have some sort of gotcha. For example, some posts say you must have the same year and versoin of software as the SBS computer. Presumably this would be Server 2008 in our case. Elsewhere I read that there is an appropriate tool called 'Small Business Server 20011 Premium Add-on'. So my question is: is any of this true? If so, what version of server software should we be getting? Also, can I have a DDC-like backup of user accounts, and is it possible to have a backup DNS on the new system.
Thanks. Dave Fenske
