My company just bought a new SBS 2011 std server to replace a malfunctioning linux server. Before I open the box and do any setup I wanted to setup the trial version on another machine just to make sure I was getting the setup right.
We have a WatchGuard XTM Firewall/Router which will be the primary DHCP server. I disabled DNS (Bind9) on the linux box and setup my trial SBS 2011 machine disabling DHCP to allow the WatchGuard to continue DHCP services. I set up a static ip
of 10.0.0.10 for the trial 2011 server. I set 10.0.0.10 on the WatchGuard for the DNS server. So here I am thinking everything is hunky dori because I can ping most servers on my interior LAN and was thinking the rest would populate
as the DHCP leases expired. It's been 4 days now and I still can't ping some of the machine so I decided to just get in the command prompt on my laptop and use nslookup. There seem to be no addresses in the DNS database (guessing that the old DNS
tables on my laptop are providing the IP addresses). It can't even resolve it's own name (hi-server-temp). What have I missed here? I looked on the internet yesterday and today for help in setting up SBS 2011 std DNS with the DHCP on the
firewall and it seems that I've done what is out there to no avail (although there isn't a lot of help with this).
Ok I have to admit that I have very little MS server experience (that's why I'm setting up a trial version before I play with the real server). Can someone point me to some good technical guidance or point me to the right setup guide. I only have a couple of more weeks to get the server setup and get the company changed over to the MS server and need some help. Is there any online SBS 2011 Std server for dummies out there?
Thanks in advance
