We use a couple of USB-drives acting as a backup-backup. I take one home at the end of each day. Thing is, I can't properly 'eject' the drive - it's in use. In fact, it's used by the System service, which keeps a bunch of files open in the 'system volume information' folder on the USB drive. It probably stores 'System restore points' stuff, since I already disabled the creation of Shadow copies. Tried several third-party eject-tools, but they all fail.
Now on non-server Windows, there's a tab on the 'System properties' called 'System protection' with which you can select drives to hold system restore points. That tab isn't available in Windows Server 2008 r2 (or other versions for that matter). You can tweak things so it WILL appear, but I wonder if that's a good idea.
So the question is: how do I prevent the creation / use of the 'system volume information' folder on USB drives? Or: is there a way to eject a USB drive, no matter if there are open files?
