We have SBS 2011 in our office as a primary domain controller and Exchange server. For backups we use BackupAssist (which itself uses windows server backup) to create bare metal recovery images. The images are written to a network share (Synology device). We would like to test the backups by recovering the image to a new server. The restore process itself seams to go smooth, we follow the basic directions that are out there: http://www.netometer.com/video/tutorials/bare-metal-restore-sbs-2008/
After the restore is complete the machine restarts and SBS 2011 seams to boot up fine, gets to the desktop and everything, but there are no users in the SBS console and active directory (like its a brand new install). I believe this is because we have a secondary domain controller and somehow SBS knows this and decides not to recover AD from the backup but to sync it from the second domain controller. This makes sense, but there are two issues: I cannot find anything on restoring AD on SBS 2011, and two, our restored SBS is not on the network because our main SBS box is still functional, so there is no secondary domain controller.
Are we are the right path to solving this or I am way off and our backups are simply not working right? I appreciate any help. Thank you!
