HDD Problem

$

Hi

We installed a SBS 2008 server with a single boot drive.

This drive now has a bad block/sector.

We added a second HDD so as to enable a mirror of the boot drive, but due to the bad block, we are unable to complete the mirror.

Is there a work around so that we do not have to "re-install" the server?

Please advise

Thanks

Http error 500 IIS 7.5

My dear saviour :-)

Our IIS 7.5 on SBS 2011 does not show any website, instead gives us an error 500. I am trying to open the default website, where I just put a simple index.html.

Following you will see the error trace, I do not understand at which point things go wrong.

I would be glad if anybody maybe can explain to me where things go wrong, so that I can fix such things in less than 2 days next time.

Outlook 2011 cannot connect SBS2011

Hello,

My clients has a SBS2011 standard fully patched with Exchange 2010 SP1 + roll update 7.

A GoDaddy certificatie is installed on the server and works fine in OWA. Outlook 2010 and 2013 can connect to Exchange but I have to type in the server manualy.

For some reason, Outlook 2011 clients cannot connect to Exchange 2010. I believe it has something to do with the Autodiscover. I can connect toHTTPS://AUTODISCOVER.domain.COM/AUTODISCOVER/AUTODISCOVER.XML which gives me error 600 (what I believe is normal).

When I check the logs of the Outlook 2011 client I notice an error 500. See below.

Thx for the help.

Server Backup/Restore Wizard Hanging at Restore Files and Folders

$

Hi! I originally posted this question on the Windows Server Backup forum but they told me to post this question on the SBS forum...

I'm trying to restore some files from a backup to a computer running SBS2011 (ie. Windows Server 2008 R2). When I use the Recovery Wizard launched from the Windows Server Backup mmc, I am able to find the backup on the USB hard drive, select the server, the backup date, and recovery type (set to files and folders). However, the application stalls on the 'Select Items to Recover' screen. It shows the server name under available items but nothing populates and the cursor indicates that it is busy. After ten minutes, a popup appears saying:

"The open instance of Recovery Wizard was inactive for more than ten minutes. The wizard was automatically cancelled to allow other backup or recovery tasks to proceed."

After saying ok to this notice, another popup appears with a title of "Windows Server Backup" appears saying Please Wait followed by a status bar that keeps refreshing itself. However, nothing happens and the program has to be stopped forcibly.

I thought it might be that the backup I made wasn't good but I made another one to test and the same problem occurs. There are no events showing up in the logs.

Has anyone encountered this problem before? Thanks!

Has anyone completly migrated/moved SBS 2008 to Office 365 ?

Hello All,

We have a client with SBS 2008 and would like to moe all AD/ emails / data / possibly some 3rd party applications  like QuickBooks (This is not confirmed yet) to office 365 and once moved would like to decommission the SBS 2008 box so from that point onwards everything including AD authentication would be done via office 365.

I have seen articles/information about moving exchange/data etc. but not the whole  infrastructure to office 365 and depend entirely on office 365 without any onsite servers.

Has anyone tested this method? if so please let me know your feedback.

Also what are the cons of depending solely on office 365 apart from the obvious , office365 or internet outages , lack of full control etc.

Regards,

Dhanushka

SBS 2011 and Windows 8.1

$

Hello,

we joined serveral Windows 8.1 computers to a SBS 2011 Standard (rollup 4 is installed) server by using the "//connect" mechanism. However, the "Windows SBS Client - Windows 7 and Windows Vista Policy" gpo is not applied. According to gpresult this policy is not processed by Windows 8.1 computers. The WMI filter for this GPO says "select * from Win32_OperatingSystem Where Version>='6.0.6002'". This includes Windows 8.1, doesn't it?

Any idea?

Hi,

I have a network in place, sbs 2008 environment with my domain controller running sbs 2008. I have a secondary domain controller running windows server 2003.

I want to decommision the secondary domain controller running windows server 2003 and replace it with a 2012 standard server and will be configured as my secondary domain controller, furthermore running all its features.

Can sbs 2008 work in conjunction with 2012 standard server?

Can roles from sbs 2008 be migrated to 2012 standard server?

Anyone kindly advise.

Thank you.

SBS 2011 - High CPU usage - Help me Microsoft forums! You're my only hope!

$

My company supports a client that has a SBS 2011 server.  For about the past year, we've been fighting a recurring issue with performance on this server.  There are about ten local users and four remote users.  The server's CPU idles at about 60%-80% but is usally running when under *any* load from 80%-100%.  If you do anything on the console, it will stay pretty much at 100%.  These are not power users by any means.  The server is utilized for file/printer sharing, Exchange 2010, and one flat file database application (non-SQL).  SharePoint is not utilized.

Needless to say, our client is frustrated.  When opening files, using their database application, or doing anything Exchange-related, there is a large amount of lag on the client side.  First, here are the server's specs:

Make:Dell PowerEdge T420
OS: SBS 2011 Standard SP1
CPU: 2 - Intel Xeon E5-2407
Memory: 32GB
RAID: RAID 1 - Operating System (C:)/Data Volume (E:) | RAID 5 - Data Volume (D:)

Here is what we have tried to resolve this to finality:

* Doubled resources - Initially the server had a single physical processor and 16GB of memory.  While these specs alone should have been fine, and were fine when the server was installed, we had periods of time where the server would just sit all day at 100% usage.  We doubled the resources and while this seemed like it would fix the issue, we are still seeing abnormally high processor usage.
* Removed all monitoring tools, antivirus, and backup software - As part of our testing, we removed our monitoring agent (LabTech) and antivirus (GFI Vipre).  Mozy is utilized for an off-site backup so that was disabled.  No dice.
* Verified updates - We made absolutely sure the server was 100% patched.
* Malware/Virus/Rootkit checks - We have ran scans checking for any potential issues with security.
* Ran MBSA and MBCA to fix any issues with the server's configuration.

There is no single process which is using all of the CPU, or we would simply be able to narrow it down.  Our calls to Microsoft support have yielded no answers.  The last call ended with Microsoft stating that a SBS server should always be running at high CPU usage.  Meanwhile, we have many other clients with less-beefy servers, with more users, who have no issues like these.

So, I'm turning to you all.  I will gladly provide logs, configuration settings, even remote assistance sessions if you all can help shed some light on what might be causing my issues.

Thank you!

Updating certificate

Hello,

We have a small business server 2008.  Currently there is a sha1 certificate with one hostname mail.domain.com.  We added a new email domain of mail.domain2.com to our email server.  The currencertificate is a godaddy standard ssl cert.  We would like to add a UCC sha256  cert to our server so both hostnames are covered and the sha2 requirements are met.  Is this possible with small business server 2008(windows 2008 , exchange 2007) and what is the process for replacing the current certificate?  Do we have to use the Small Business Server tools to do this?

Thanks

Setting up public folders in Outlook for all accounts

$

First of all apologies if I've put this under the wrong topic or anything; this is my first post.

What I'd like to be able to achieve in Outlook is to have a shared folder that appears in the Mail view called "Contracts", which will have hundreds of subfolders such as "3457 - Aurora", that will appear in all our Outlook accounts, so users can drag emails into them.

Then when someone receives an email regarding a particular contract, they can drag it into the appropriate shared folder, so everyone can see all emails regarding that contract.

I'm sure this isn't that unusual a request, but I can't figure out the best way to achieve it.

Most of our employees use Outlook 2007, some have 2010 and some 2013.
Our mail server runs SBS2011

I've tried using the Public Folder Management Tool in the Exchange Management Console, and that's the best outcome I've had so far; however, it only shows up in the Folder view in Outlook and not under mail.

Thanks,
Phil

Hi,

We manage multiple servers SBS, 2012, 2008 etc..

I come across multiple VSS errors (up to 17 on one server) that happen daily, I check the backup and there are no errors and all files backup successfully but i am wondering how i can prevent these VSS errors completely.

Some of the backups are using BackupExec, some BackupAssist etc..

Any help would be much appreciated!

migrate sbs2008 standard to Windows Essentials 2012 r2 as VM: No migration mode panel

Time to age out my lap sbs2008 and learn more about Hyper-v at same time. SBS2008 is physical Dell PowerEdge, ESS2012r2 is virtual server on Windows hyper-v server 2012 r2.

I have done many installs using Hyper-v and love the platform. Started install of ESS2012r2 from an .iso file and never say a migrate your server option. I know with my many sbs2011 installs and upgrades to get an unattended file into the USB to migrate or speed up install or migrate but I never got an option to migrate and of course there is no USB support on the virtual machine.

ended up with a botched ESS2012R2 install which will work after some screwing around, it's only my lab.

Have I missed something doing this on virtual machine rather than migrating to real hardware? googling and documentation says ESS2012 will present a migration screen and I only assumed 2012R2 would also

Norvell & Associates Public Accountants USA Singapore Alabama: Tax Benefits for Education

$

DALLAS – The price of higher education can be expensive for students and parents. The IRS offers these tips about education tax benefits that can help offset some college costs.
Tax credits, deductions and savings plans can help taxpayers with their expenses for higher education. A tax credit reduces the amount of income tax you may have to pay, and a deduction reduces the amount of your income that is subject to tax, thus generally reducing the amount of tax you may have to pay.

“Often, tax credits are more valuable, because they reduce the amount of tax owed,” said Clay Sanford, an IRS spokesman in Dallas. “Deductions reduce the income on which tax is figured.”
American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC): This credit can be up to $2,500 per eligible student. The AOTC is available for the first four years of post secondary education. Forty percent of the credit is refundable. That means that you may be able to receive up to $1,000 of the credit as a refund, even if you don’t owe any taxes. Qualified expenses include tuition and fees, course related books, supplies and equipment. A recent law extended the AOTC through the end of Dec. 2017.

Lifetime Learning Credit (LLC): With the LLC, you may be able to claim up to $2,000 for qualified education expenses on your federal tax return. There is no limit on the number of years you can claim this credit for an eligible student.
You can claim only one type of education credit per student on your federal tax return each year. If you pay college expenses for more than one student in the same year, you can claim credits on a per-student, per-year basis. For example, you can claim the AOTC for one student and the LLC for the other student.
“Use the IRS’s Interactive Tax Assistant tool on IRS.gov to help determine if you’re eligible for these credits,” Sanford added. “The tool is a tax law resource that takes you through a series of questions and provides you with responses.”
Student loan interest deduction: Other than home mortgage interest, you generally can’t deduct the interest you pay. However, you may be able to deduct interest you pay on a qualified student loan. The deduction can reduce your taxable income by up to $2,500. You don’t need to itemize deductions to claim it.

These education benefits are subject to income limitations and may be reduced or eliminated depending on your income.
For more information, visit the Tax Benefits for Education Information Center at IRS.gov. Also, check Publication 970, Tax Benefits for Education. The booklet’s also available at IRS.gov or by calling 800-TAX-FORM (800-829-3676).

HELP! SBS 2003 FRS error on two DC's, NO NETLOGON or sysvol shares!

$

Hi guys,

Main AD DC, DNS and DHCP Server is SBS2003, I had a 2008 R2 server that I promoted to a DC but was getting FRS 13508 errors, I spend a few hours trying to troubleshoot and after read some technet threads I was starting to think maybe the SBS 2003 server was causing the problems.

After doing some dcdiag tests I attempted to run "Enable Journal Wrap Automatic Restore" but in doing this it gutted my current polices and logon scripts, killed the sysvol and netlogon shares and will not replicate as the SBS 2003 server now throws 13508 errors saying it can't talk to the second DC when it was never throwing these errors before!

I was thinking of using one of the backup tapes and just doing a system state restore, will with restore the registry, and sysvol + netlogon shares?
