Old SBS 2003 server dying. Need help switching to Server 2008 PDC. Previously migrated from 2K.

I originally posted in Migration and was told to post here. All help appreciated!

From what I gather, AD was originally setup on a single Win2K server, which ran Exchange and the Intranet. A SBS 2003 server was added, running CRM and a fax server. A 2003 Standard File Server, 2003 Exchange Server and 2008 Web Edition Intranet/SQL server have been added since.

The Win2K server was demoted, however I dont think Exchange 2000 was uninstalled 100%. It's not listed as a server in the Exchange System Manager, but in AD Sites and Services it is still listed there.

The aging 2003 SBS server is now dying. (I do have System State backups.) The Raid controller battery is dead and 1 of the 2 mirrored drives is offline. Occasionally the server locks up. A new replacement server has been ordered, which will be running 2008 Standard.

The Domain Function level is "Windows 2000 native" and the forest level is "Windows 2000".

Apparently SBS has a different AD schema to 2008 standard, which has me a little worried.

My current plan is to update the SBS server, run the AD Prep commands from the 2008 DVD, add 2008 as a DC and then demote the SBS 2003 server. However, I suspect it wont be quite that simple. (In fact, the word nightmare keeps popping in to mind..)

Is that likely to go smoothly? Is there anything specific I need to know?

Any help and thoughts would be appreciated,

TSB
