We run a previously SBS 2003 Windows Domain with Exchange 2003. Since about 2 years we have extended this domain with 2 Win 2008 R2 DC's and an Exchange 2010 SP1 Enterprise SErver. Everything works fine so far, DNS is running on all three DC's (the old
2003 one and the new 2008 R2 ones), DHCP only runs on w2k8 R2....
The w2k8 DC's are GC but the FSMO roles are still hjeld by the w2k3 SBS DC. Since about 4 month I have uninstalled the Exchange 2003 server after I have made sure that public folders replicatoin etc. was everything in place. We do not experince any issues so far, but now I am about to finally remove the 2003 SBS server. Still there are a few issues because the Exchange 2003 uninstallalation did not finalize well. I read a löot of articloes which state that this probably never will work out of the box. My Exchange Services on the w2k3 DC (and exchagne server) are still there but they don't start and the server doesn't complain though.
However, I am not concerned about htis broken uninstallation fo the 2003 exchange, but I wonder about a few things:
get-exchangeserver cmdlet on the 2010 Exchagne server still shows me the old exchagne without any role:
Name Site ServerRole Edition AdminDisplayVersion
---- ---- ---------- ------- -------------------
xxxxxx None Standard Version 6.5 (Bui...
EX1 domain.intra/Con... Mailbox,... Enterprise Version 14.1 (Bu...
Do I have to remove the old Exchange Server Administrative Group via ADSI-Edit from CN=Administrative Groups,CN=DOMAIN,CN=Microsoft Exchange,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=domain,DC=intra - this "CN=Erste administrative Gruppe, still exists in the AD configuration beside the Exchange 2010 Administrative Group "Exchange Administrative Group (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT)"
Also in the Event Log of the functional 2010 Exchange Server I see the following two errors/warings.
5020:
The topology doesn't contain a route to Exchange 2000 Server or Exchange Server 2003...
5006
Cannot find route to Mailbox Server CN=.... for all stores
I just want to make sure that all pieces are correctly removed re. Exchange before I really demote the Domain Controller. I have to mention that after the broken unistall of Exchagne 2003 I didn't remove it manually, I left it as it was since it didn't cause any trouble so far.
