Hi
I have a physical Dell R320 Server running SBS 2011. It has been in use for 3 months and performing well. On Monday 22/7/13 the nightly built in SBS backup failed which alerted us to a problem. On further investigation we noticed 50% -79% fluctuating CPU usage. I rebooted the server last night before the backup schedule but the situation was the same. Looking in Task Manager Processes tab no individual process could be seen to be to blame for the high usage but I tried to stop a non critical one (APC UPS agent) as that was regularly around 10-15%. This made no real difference. I also tried to stop the AVG real-time scanning for 10 mins but that didn't make any noticeable difference.
On looking in The Application Log:
I have one instance of the following:
Event ID 906 ESE
Infomation Store (2564) A significant portion of the database buffer cache has been written out to the system paging file. This may result in severe perfomance degradation.
I tried run the ExBPA but that seemed to go beyond it 's 2 minute estimate and hang at around 28%. Also the queue's seem clear
I also see a recurring ASP.NET warning 1309 Event Code 3001 every ten minutes but that started yesterday at around 10.26 so this is potentially a symptom of the fault not the cause?
I have checked in Dell Server Administrator for Hardware issues but apart from a couple of unexpected sense codes (informational) on the controller after the reboot nothing seems to raise alarm bells there.
I attach an example of my Task Manager and processes tab as you can see the CPU usage is all over the place and I have never seen anything like it.
Hopefully someone can help, while the six users of the server have not complained of any issues yet I would like to get to the bottom of this and the failing backups asap
