http 500 error sbs 2003 exchange server

We recently experienced corruption of our SBS 2003 server during a power outage.
With the help of Microsoft technical support we have repaired nearly all of the server's function.
In this process we have merged SBS2003 SP2 into the installation files and reinstalled the server.
As a side note, during the corruption, the domain name became changed to the server box name alone rather than the fully qualified server.domain.local.
After the rebuild, the domain was renamed back to server.domain.local.
When we view the exchange accounts the in-office Outlook accounts they are connected to server.domain.local, but if we wish to add the exchange server to a new profile or new user, the username can only be found in the old server name only mail server.

We have restored oma. and owa services and can access the mail server through the web and via RPC over HTTP.
The only thing remaining is ActiveSync. We have created a new certificate, just to play it safe. We get at HTTP 500 error from inside and outside of the firewall. We have gone through Alan Hardesty's advice on setting up the virtual Web sites, and even hired a consultant to confirm all the settings. BTW, the consultant thinks that ActiveSync is confused by the server name issue listed above.

We are experiencing the problems on both Apple and Android devices.

All the common remedies, (forms based authentication. etc) have been tried.

No errors reported in the logs.

Just stumped.
