Unable to take backups on a failing SBS 2008 server

Hello all

We have a Client with a HP ProLiant DL380 G6 server running SBS 2008 server

Recently there was a predictive disk failure on one of the disks and while troubleshooting the issue another predictive disk failure occurred on another drive. Also during the troubleshooting process a BSOD occurred and the server got rebooted but we can access the server and its services without any issues.

With the assistance from HP we inserted a new hard disk but the rebuild process never kick started and we were advised to reboot the server in order to start the rebuilding process

Before rebooting we checked the SBS backups (which were working fine earlier) recovery options there were no recoverable file/folders or applications on the destination USB drive.

So we added a new USB drive which was a 3TB drive and after formatting the sector size with 512KB we managed to get it working.

When the backup was completed it was stated that the backup completed with errors. Once of the partitions could not be backed up and following error was listed.

The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.

This partition contains data files and nothing else.

Also the aoolication recovery option was greyed out. When we examine the vent viewer found the following errors

1. Exchange VSS Writer (instance 4b011b99-e215-4eb4-bdb0-4b6b84a59598:6) has unsuccessfully completed the backup of storage group 'First Storage Group'. No log files have been truncated for this storage group.

2. Exchange VSS Writer (instance 4b011b99-e215-4eb4-bdb0-4b6b84a59598:6) has unsuccessfully completed the backup of storage group 'Second Storage Group'. No log files have been truncated for this storage group.

3. Information Store (4060) Shadow copy instance 6 aborted.

Using the file folder recovery option on the recovery wizard we can browse the folders containing exchange databases and transaction logs and based on what we can see related files are in place.

  1. How can we get exchange data to get properly backed up?
  2. In case if we need to rebuild the server can we use the  EDB files and transactions logs to get exchange data restored ?

Any other suggestions and /or information is greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks

Dhanushka
