My SBS 2011 Standard runs on:

  • Intel Xeon E3-1240 V2 Ivy Bridge 3.4GHz (3.8GHz Turbo) LGA 1155 69W Quad-Core Server Processor BX80637E31240V2
  • SUPERMICRO MBD-X9SCM-F-O LGA 1155 Intel C204 Micro ATX Intel Xeon E3 Server Motherboard
  • Kingston 32GB (4 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 ECC Unbuffered Server Memory w/TS Model KVR16E11K4/32
  • 2 x SAMSUNG 840 Pro Series MZ-7PD512BW 2.5" 512GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) RAID1
  • 2 x Western Digital RE4 WD2003FYYS 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive RAID1
  • SuperMicro PWS-465-PQ PS/2 Multi-output Server Power Supply 80PLUS - OEM
  • SUPERMICRO SuperChassis CSE-732D2-500B Black Pedestal Server Chassis
  • CyberPower CP1350AVRLCD 1350 VA 810 Watts UPS

I am having some issues with the SSDs in RAID1.  The read transfer speeds are up around 1GB/s but the write speeds are barely getting 100MB/s.  The OS and Intel Rapid Storage Technology automatically defaults the write-back cache to disabled but even with it manually switched to enabled the write speeds are barely 50MB/s faster.  Samsung's Magician Software doesn't recognize the drives because it doesn't support RAID.

I am wondering if it may have to do with the raid controller integrated into the board and if it's not capable of supporting the current workload.

I spoke with someone else about this who does lots of work on drives (not so much server OS) and he seems to think it has something to do with the operating system drivers for the SSDs in RAID.

It would be greatly appreciate if I could get some help with this.  I am desperate at this point.  I need to know if it is better for me fix the problem or just replace the SSDs with a couple 500GB WD RE drives instead.

Thanks for all the help in advance.

I will provide screen shots when I am able to. I guess I have to be verified.  Does anyone know how to do that?
