SBS 2008 sp2 event id 1058 cannot access \\domain\sysvol

Hello everyone,

I have a SBS server that is giving me fits. group policy preprocessing is failing with the event id 1058.

I have checked DNS and AD functionality and all tests come back good.

DFS and file replication has been checked.

Name resolution and network connectivity also checks out as ok.

The event log entry is as follows:

Log Name:      System

Source:        Microsoft-Windows-GroupPolicy

Date:          5/28/2013 7:05:07 AM

Event ID:      1058

Task Category: None

Level:         Error

Keywords:

User:          SYSTEM

Computer:      hostname.domain.local

Description:

The processing of Group Policy failed. Windows attempted to read the file \\domain\SysVol\domain\Policies\{55F3FA5F-E148-442B-B234-1FE7A02624DF}\gpt.ini from a domain controller and was not successful. Group Policy settings may not be applied until this event is resolved. This issue may be transient and could be caused by one or more of the following:

a) Name Resolution/Network Connectivity to the current domain controller.

b) File Replication Service Latency (a file created on another domain controller has not replicated to the current domain controller).

c) The Distributed File System (DFS) client has been disabled.

Event Xml:

  </EventData>

</Event>

What I find to be unique about this error is the entry   <Data Name="ErrorDescription">A device attached to the system is not functioning. </Data> which is different that most of the articles I find referring to event id 1058.

Another notable issue is that the netlogon service hangs on startup for a few minutes before completing. There are also some interesting entries in the netlogon debug log.

Apparently the errors do cease or decrease after the server has been running for several hours.

Any help or advice that anyone could add to this would be greatly appreciated since if I don’t get this resolved by Friday of this week I will be forced to redo the server from scratch.

Regards

John Abrams
