Moving to a SBS2011 Premium on a HyperV 2012 system (based on server 2012 or server core host) - so two VM's -- SBS2011 Domain plus Server 2008 SQLServer.
I'm trying to figure out the best strategy for backing up the two VM's onto rotating USB drives. I realize hyperV doesn't support USB redirection so it complicates things if you want the VM's to backup themselves.
I see that the new HyperV 2012 has added hyperV backup support to the windows 2012 backup meaning I could backup the VM's from the host directly to an attached USB drive:

I realize it makes it harder to restore specific files but I haven't had to that in many years as my users know how to do it themselves with the "previous version" functionality in Windows.
Any comments on this approach? It looks like it syncs up with all the shadowcopy providers in the VM's so it should provide a quality backup and avoids the issue of having to create a pass-through USB disk or VHD files on the USB drive.
Thanks.
