Outlook Anywhere access problems (SBS 2003)

Hi --

I have several users on various Windows 7 PCs running either Office 2007 or Office 2010, connecting remotely via Outlook Anywhere to an SBS 2003 box. They are all reporting connectivity problems that I cannot figure out.

Every one of these PCs can connect to the Exchange server via Outlook Anywhere just fine. But what happens is that Outlook will randomly lose the connection and suddenly announce that it's trying to connect to the Exchange server. And it can't. Multiple attempts to reconnect fail. Then, seemingly without reason, Outlook will reconnect and everything will be fine again.

But these sudden disconnections are often pretty long, and they are always disruptive.

During the time of these disconnections, the SBS 2003 machine's event logs show no errors, or even warnings, that would explain this. Even while remote users claim that they can't reach the Exchange server, users within the LAN aren't having a problem. I haven't been able to pinpoint issues with the WAN connection or the router that would explain this.

Two of these remote users are local. One is in a neighboring county. And three are out of state.

One of the users tells me that when Outlook's connection fails, he can't connect to OWA, either -- the browser tells him that the server cannot be reached. But everyone swears that, except for this problem, their Internet connection is not affected.

Does anyone know what could be happening here, and how I can fix this?

Thanks
CL
