I have an SBS 2011 server with Exchange 2010 that was setup by a previous IT company, so I have no idea what the previous configuration was; however, SBS/IIS/Exchange and all associated software has been running fine. IT decided to change its ISP provider and consequently its router hardware & configuration without any consequence to the server. I reset the SBS network IPv4 settings to match the new IP address of the server & the gateway, disabled DHCP on the router, and ran the Connect to the Internet wizard and everything appears to be working **locally** I can connect to the localhost/OWA and emails are sending and receiving internally without any issue. But, when I try to connect to the server remotely (from home) or receive emails from external domains, it fails. I can connect to the web from the server without any failure.
(1) Should I setup a static IP on the ISP router to just use it as a gateway?
(2) Does SBS 2011 configure the ports on the router with the connect to the internet wizard or do I need to manually set those (80, 443, 1943, etc) with port forwarding on the router? The router has UPnP enabled.
I have narrowed down the culprit is the DNS. But have no idea where to start debugging the DNS settings.
(3) Is there a tech article with DNS 101 to guide me through this process?
(4) Could DHCP be a factor in this?
I'm probably missing something fundamental here. Can you help me figure this out?
