SBS2003 R2 Premium

Well  I have gotten to the limitation of my SBS 2003 R2 32 bit and need to have a 64 Bit solution for the server OS and SQL server. The SBS server is the DC and I use AD.  The SQL application uses AD password verification for signin.  I plan to add a 64 bit Server with Windows server  2008  and SQL 2008 server standard (the app will not work with 2012) to the Domain, make it Domain controller and transfer the AD roles to it.  Some places say there is no problem with this others say SBS causes problems during the migration. Would it be better to Apply the Transition pack to the SBS server then migrate it or is this just an unnecessary exercise.  Any other tips to ease the migration would be appreciated.  I do not use Exchange or Sharepoint on the SBS server at all.

Thanks
