SBS 2011 Essentials: Can Access Server Via Remote Web Access But Not Via VPN

$

I'll give as much information as I can.  Have set up SBS 2011 Essentials and am successfully able to access/open files on the server, from a remote location client (running Windows XP), using the <DOMAIN>.remotewebaccess.com.  I can also enter the IP address of the router from the remote location client and, when I do, the router knows to pass me off to the server's IP address and I can use my credentials to access/open files on the server.  But, I cannot join the client to the network via VPN.  Which, I believe, I need to do in order to map the network drive to be able to access the files on the server.  Any thoughts on what I am doing incorrectly when trying to connect to the server via VPN?  I am using FiOS to connect -- residential grade service (dynamic IP address) and the ActionTec 424WR router.  This seems not to be a router issue as, like I said, I can log into the server using the router's IP address and the <DOMAIN>.remotewebaccess.com.  Thanks for any help you can provide.

Monitoring OWA / ActiveSync Activity

Hi

Does anyone have any ready made scripts that can be scheduled and emailed daily to summarise OWA / ActiveSync activity?

Ideally I would like to Date / user /  IP address / OWA or Active session.

As an administrator I feel concerned that i'm unable to see at a glance who and how people are accessing our Exchange without spending time parsing log files and presenting the data into meaningful format. We do not have the IT budget to purchase a third party piece of software to obtain these this info.

Help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

SBS 2011 Migration fail then blank desktop

$

Failed migration from SBS 2008, the error indicates that it was not able to make itself a domain controller. Problem due to failing SBS 2008 source server that randomly hangs. So I'm guessing the failure occured becuse the source server hung during the migration process. The new SBS2011 server then booted into a normal screen not joined to the domain. I then rebooted the source server to get it back online and then manually launched the DCPROMO command "which maybe I should not have done." The command was successful and the server joined the domain but it is not in migration mode.

Tried another reboot, now I can log into the new SBS2011 server but the desktop is blank without a task bar. I can launch task manager and run individual apps , control panel, event viewer, explorer.exe etc. I can even launch the SBS console. Not seeing any events in event viewer that indicates problem with desktop. I tried booting into safe mode same result. Then tried turning off account control and rebooting, same result. I found a reg key fix to put the server back into migration mode but not sure if I should do that without having access to the desktop. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

I am trying to configure VPN access. I punched through firewall 1723 & 47. VPN wizard completed successfully.  While trying to access, I get 800 error. Do I need to punch ipsec & L2TP ports as well? If so, what port numbers.

Getting rid of Small Business Server

$

So I have limited IT knowledge, but my business is looking to get rid of our Small Business Server and put everything into the cloud.  I'm a little confused on finding the right solutions that work for what we need.

With Exchange I can run Office 365, however I still have questions on that.  To get rid of my server I also have to have files somewhere and I was looking into Microsoft SkyDrive Pro which based on using SkyDrive for personal use that seems to be exactly what I'm looking for.  However I feel like I can't find clear answers if SkyDrive Pro is integrated into Office 360 automatically and how much storage there is?  I found something stating file storage 10 GB and 500 MB each additional user in Office 365 and assuming that is basically SkyDrive Pro?

My main question with losing Microsoft SBS to control users from a central location and set up new users on machines so I can control.  I looked at Microsoft Intune and that seems to help control updates, software, etc, but can't find anything that states that would also set up new users and settings on a new machine?  Basically I will have remote locations and will need to change and set up new users on these remote machines like I do with SBS now in our local office.  Any recommendations on solutions to allow me to control users on remote machines?

Lastly still little confused with everything I've looked at if solution like Microsoft Intune would completely replace antivirus/malware software like Trend Micro that I currently use?  Would I still need to deploy Trend Micro (which they have a cloud solution now also) on all my machines along with something like Intune?

Once quick last question also is does anyone know of a good and affordable employee monitoring software.  I've had some hardware solutions proposed a long time ago, but just want to track primarily what employees are doing online and have looked at a couple software solutions and not sure if they are good or not.  On our server now I have GFI but seems to always lock up the machine and have never used it and IT guy that installed I no longer use.

Thanks!!!!  Seth

SBS 2003 BPA - Install SBS 2003 SP1 - Windows File Protection error

$

We have inherited a SBS 2003 and have been updating and running BPA on this server.

The BPA stated that the SBS2003 SP1 has not been applied and that this should be updated, have followed the MS guide to this and download five updates and apply them each in turn;

Windows Server 2003 SP1 has already been applied (the server is at SP2) - so this wasn't applied

Install Windows Sharepoint 2.0 SP1 -  this had already been applied.

Install Exchange Server 2003 SP1 - again this is already at Exchange SP2

Install Win XP SP2 client app - this was installed.

Finally install SBS2003 SP1;

Whilst installing this update get a Windows File Protection error - Insert your Service Pack 2 CD-ROM -

I've asked this question on Experts Exchange - and have received advice to extract Win Server 2003 SP2 to a folder - which I've done;

However the Windows File Protection dialogue box states 'insert your CD now' and I can't point this to the folder - the only options I have are 'retry', 'More Info' and cancel.

The SBS 2003 SP1 has installed in the background and this is completed and wants to do a restart - I'm a little nervous of doing a restart in case it doesn't come back.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Uninstall Active Directory

$

I bought Windows Server 2012 Essentials thinking it would be easy to setup.  I did not know it was going to install active directory by default.  I am replacing an older server with a new one and it does not need active directory, it just uses a workgroup setup with file shares.  This is for a very small company with 8 users.

I went to uninstall the active directory throught the Server Manager but all of the check boxes are grayed out and I am login as the Administrator.

Can I get rid of Active Directory in this server version?

I like this new server software because of its user backup and VPN built-in features but did not know that I would be stuck with active directory, the client does not want or need to login to the server, mainly to share folders and access scans from there scanner.

I also have a text mode in the lower right hand, I guess since I had to use a un-signed drive it puts this message there, how can I remove this?

SBS 2011 Windows 7 Client Logs Off at End of Day, PC Powers Down Hours Later

$

Hi,

In my SBS 2011 installations, Windows 7 users are purposely logging off at the end of the workday (instead of powering the machine off) so they can continue work at a later time from home.  When they attempt to remotely access their computers using LogMeIn or RDC, they are finding that their PC's have powered down and are, naturally, unresponsive.  The local power settings in Control Panel are unable to be manually changed and refer to SBS Administration.

How can I help my users to be able to log out of the network, but not have the PC's power themselves down after a several hour interval?

Is there a GPO that needs adjustment?

Thanks for your help!

SBS 2003 Monitor Problem

Hello,

When we try to access "Monitor Small Business Server" thru the Server Management Console we get the following:

The page cannot be displayed

An error occurred on the page you
are trying to view.

To work around this problem, perform the following steps. After each step,
try again to access the page.

  • Ensure that the MSSQL$SBSMONITORING service is started.
  • Ensure that the server is not low on memory or disk space.
  • Restart the server.
  • Verify that the server is functional and that there are no system-wide
    problems.
  • Run the Set Up Monitoring Reports and Alerts task in the Server Management
    Monitoring and Reporting taskpad.

The MSSQL$SBSMONITORING service is running.  The server has 4 GB of RAM and is not low on disk space (the 2 drives have over 50 % free disk).

Please advise on how to correct thsi problem.

Thanks,

Nick

L2TP problem with file server

Hi, I have a strange behavior in my network. I have SBS 2011 and  zyxel firewall which is doing L2TP termination. Several clients configured with L2TP. When I open L2TP tunnel from my home, I can list files on a file server (NAS - Samba that is in the domain and we use domain accounts for access). - Everything is working !

When other user opens L2TP tunnel from a different country, from two different places (belongs to same provider), he is not able to open mapped network drive. He can ping both ip, name, access to some time trackng system by name and local webpage ..... but for file he gets no access.

Also same user then access via PPTP ( which ends in SBS 2011 ) - Everything is working !!

Also same user access through mobile teethering , opens L2TP tunnel, he can work ! Everything is working !!

We also configured router on that location in bridge mode, and with laptop configured PPoE connection , and still nothing (that means it is not Remote LAN). Also we tried with the different PC, on the same location, we got same behavior (so that means it is not Laptop). We used mine credentials there, and still same results (That means it is not user account )

Because everything is operational if I connect from home and other person via teethering it means it is not L2TP configuration.

I kindly ask for help , if somebody have an idea what can it be I appreciate it .

Thanks

SBS 2003 migration options?

$

I am an IT consultant for a small company that has SBS 2003 with about 10 users.

I need to upgrade the server it sits on which leads me to recommend that we upgrade the OS platform as well.  Seeing as Microsoft has retired the SBS family, can someone please advise what options we have at this point for an upgrade/migration?

From what I gather I have three options:

  1. Upgrade SBS 2003 to SBS 2011 and deal with the fact that it will be the final platform in the SBS family, along with all the end of life support items due to arise.
  2. Upgrade SBS 2003 to Windows Server 2012 Essentials, but migrate Exchange to the Microsoft cloud platform while leaving all other roles on 2012 Essentials.
  3. Upgrade SBS 2003 to Windows Server 2012 Essentials including using 2012 Standard as a Hyper-V host and virtualize the Exchange server, keeping it on-premise.

Am I missing any options?  What are other companies doing in the wake of SBS being retired?

SBS 2003 to 2011migration-questions on migration

Hi All

Wishing everyone a happy new year!!!!

Was reading the official migration guide from Microsoft and also the guides from Susan and Philip, BTW fantastic job  by both susan and philip on creating the migration documentations!!!!!!!.

Have few questions regarding the migration  so if anyone can shed some light would greatly appreciated.

1.Can the migration be done is stages(spread through a couple of weeks . less than 21 days)?if so what would be best way of breaking down the migration process ?

2.After we complete the Internet address wizard and till we complete the mailbox migration  it appears OWA will not function .We have a pure MAC based client who are running MAC mail and some on outlook 2011 for MAC.Will they not be able to access emails till the completion of mailbox move?

2.On all the locations its mentioned to add the POP3 connectors after demoting the SBS 2003 server and removing it from the network. We may need to download the emails from another location using pop3 connectors to the SBS 2011 server as soon as the email migration/mailbox move is completed. Will that going to cause any issues when demoting the SBS 2003 server?

Many thanks

Dhanushka

SBS 2011 Critical Alert: Forest Trust Licencing error. Source: License Compliance service

I had a problem with the Sharepoint 2010 Management Shell. I found by searches in the Internet and finally in a KB that is was caused by the WMF 3.0 (PowerShell 3.0) that was offered as optional update end of 2012 though WU. So I un-installed this optional update and then had to restart the SBS 2011.

Since I rebooted (I rebooted more than once since) I get following critical alert in the SBS 2011 Console for my server:
Title:
   Forest Trust Licencing error.
Source:
   License Compliance service.

I already searched the Internet, KBs and what ever and checked with netdom query and verify, but there is not Trust defined. SBS anyway shouldn't allow Forest Trusts at all. I don't know where the error comes from and what will happen, if I don't fix it. I've seen that users wrote that this error caused their servers to shut down after 10 days. If nothing happens I don't mind to just suppress the critical alert, but can't find the notification setting for this one.

Any idea how to fix this?

TIA

Henry

SBS 2008 Backup Completed With Warnings

I have an automated backup to complete every night and lately it has has came up with this error "The application will not be available for recovery from this backup. The consistency check failed for the component Microsoft Exchange Server\Microsoft Information Store..."

I have verified the database and transaction log files which resulted in a clean shutdown so I unmounted the database, moved the logs, remounted and run the backup but it still come up with the same error.

The application event says:

eseutil (4256) The range of log files \\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy120\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\Mailbox\First Storage Group\E0000056820.log to \\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy120\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\Mailbox\First Storage Group\E000005EDC9.log is missing (error -528) and cannot be used. If these log files are required for recovery, a good copy of these log files will be needed for recovery to complete successfully.

For more information, click http://www.microsoft.com/contentredirect.asp.

It's probably something small and I'm now stumped, any help would be much appreciated!

Server 2012 NAS set full control for Admin user but cannot add files and slow USB and RDP transfer rate

$

Hi, I'm new to using Server 2012 (or any server OS) and have come across 2 issues. I've created a shared folder using File and Storage services, SMB Quick profile. I've set the Administrator account to full access. I've also added a group of users with read and execute only permissions, the Administrator account is not within the group.

Issue 1:

I've mapped the drive to my desktop computer running Windows 7 Home. I use the Administrator credentials to log in. I try to add files through the mapped drive but does not recognize my permission to create or copy files ("You need permission to perform this action"). I can only speculate that the issue is caused by the account credentials on my desktop do not match those of the server? Any suggestions on fixing this issue?

Note: I've created a separate admin account and group on the server with full control and still unable to add or edit files on the network drive,

Issue 2:

When I copy multiple files at once through RDP or USB, the files transfer at expected rates but once one file is complete it waits up to a minute before starting the next file.

I took a look at the memory usage during the file transfers, it looks like each file is buffering to ram before being written. The ram seems to buffer up to 2 gigs then waits to drop down to 500 MB or so before moving on. As most images that are being stored are RAW panoramas they can get quite large. If I'm transfering a few hundred gigs of them at a time this takes up to 12 hours.

Hardware:
HP xw8200 Workstation
Dual Xeon 3.4GHz Processors
8 GB DDR2 Ram (4 x 2GB sticks)
500MB WD RE4 System Drive
4TB WD RE4 Storage Drive

OS:
Windows Server 2012

SBS DHCP

Is there any way to stop SBS 2011 from shutting down its DHCP service whenit detects another DHCP service on the network? We want to have two servers providing DHCP for redundancy purposes so our users don't suffer if a server dies.
