How to overcome the drawbacks of SBS?

$

Hi Guzy,

How we can able to overcome the following Things in SBS ?

  • There's no option for custom installation
  • What happen when we add more than 75 users in it
  • Auto configuration of all the services by itself while installing (WSUS,DHCP,DNS etc.,)

How we can avoid this kind of behavior in SBS? I really love this SBS suite as it comes with all in one pack,But this nature really making me worried of it :( :(

Problems backing up an SBS 2003 box are continually delaying our migration project

Hi --

This "little" problem has thrown off this migration project by several months. I can't figure out what's going on.

I have an HP Proliant server running SBS 2003 Standard SP2 that we've been trying to migrate to SBS 2011 for several months now. But I cannot get the full backup of the SBS 2003 box required by the migration tools.

I get pretty much the same results no matter what I try:

  1. I set the options in NTBACKUP for a full, bare-metal backup and launch it.
  2. NTBACKUP analyzes the hard drives and comes up with an estimate of 20 to 26 hours (usually) for the backup.

  3. NTBACKUP starts backing up to the destination device.
  4. After several hours, the server starts spitting out a litany of "Windows delayed write failed" errors, mentioning the .BKF file being written to the output device, ruining the backup.

  5. To get the server to shut up, I have to reboot it. Cancelling the backup doesn't seem to have any effect, and killing the NTBACKUP run won't stop these "Delayed write failed" balloons from popping up over and over and over and over and over again.

I have tried backing up to the following:

  1. A Seagate NAS -- purchased in January -- connected via gigabit LAN connection;

  2. Open disk space on two other Windows 2003 servers on the domain, also via gigabit LAN connection;

  3. A USB3 external disk drive -- purchased this week and used only for this purpose -- connected straight to one of the server's USB ports.

The only thing I haven't tried is backing up to a hard drive connected to the server's hard drive controller, because this is a 1U server and I have no available hard drive bays.

I already checked high and low and ensured that the NIC drivers were the latest, most up-to-date drivers available. But out-of-date NIC drivers shouldn't affect a USB-connected hard drive ...

Near as I can tell, this server has every available Windows update installed.

The server is running with 4 GB of RAM.

How do I get this machine backed up so that I can complete my migration project?

Thanks,
CL

Hello

I having major problems decommissioning my SBS 2008 Server. When I run DCPROMO it fails and gives the error "Failed to detect if Active Directory Domain Services binaries were installed." Also when I try to run Remove Roles in Server Manager I get the error "Server Manager encountered an unexpected error while collecting data about the status of this computer.

I have run the Update Readiness Tool and the CheckSUR.log file contains the following

I have looked at the content of the currently available WinRM packages but they do not appear to be the correct version. Also it seems that the package/patch distributed as KB9500999 is no longer available. Is there anywhere I can go to obtain the required mum files?

Exchange 2010 SP3 hangs at Languages on SBS 2011. Email Down... Help!

We started have slowness issue yesterday. By the afternoon the Server was barely usable. We run SBS 2011 on a Hyper-V VM (I inherited) 24GB RAM and 120GB system and 60GB Exchange drive on a 12 (300GB) SAS Raid 10 Mini SAN.  TrendMicro AV was removed because of a compatibility issue and Forefront was install as a service pack but disabled (?). SBS had SP2 and rollup 8. I saw multiple high CPU of w3wp.exe for the Exchange Sync App Pool. I read that SP3 clear the high CPU on these apps and downloaded Rollup 3. I also read that many times the Rollup took 5 or more hours so I started yeaterday at 5:30 PM MST.

The first attempt failed the validation process after an hour. I fixed something (?) and reran it. This time it i got about halfway through (10PM). But it crash or the server restarted. I was not sitting in front of it at that moment.

After the server reboot I started the process again. After validation there was only 8 tasks instead of 14. But it seems slower. After about  2 hours (1.5 hours chewing on Laguage Files) it get to Languages and just hangs...

I set the Exchange service to manual and rebooted. The same, after about 2 hours of waiting it gets to the "languages" and hangs...

I set Sharepoint and Shutdown the DBs. The same, after about 2 hours of waiting it gets to the "languages" and hangs...

I have checked and rechecked for AV I find none. Forefront seems to be disable but I can't find it to uninstall it.

I thing the first time (half way) through something happened to the schema...

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

Mac Clients authenticating with our Exchange Server 2010

$

Hi,

We have an issue with our Mac Clients authenticating with our Exchange Server. We have Exchange 2010 Version 14.03.0174.001.

Outlook is saying the credentials are incorrect for the user when we know they work fine in OWA and in Outlook 2010.

It seems this is since we re-keyed are SSL certificate. I have changed the EWS directory to Basic Authentication and also re-created the EWS directory. I have also re-ran all the SBS Wizards.

Is there anything else we can do to get this sorted?

Thanks

Send As permissions are being deleted, possible Protected Group problem

$

I have a SBS 2008 server with a number of shared mailboxes that I need to assign Send As permissions to. However, I am getting bouncebacks when trying to use the Send As and have noticed that the settings I am applying are deleted after a short time. I am pretty sure the problem I am encountering is because SBS has Domain Users as a member of the elevated group Print Operators. I have removed the Domain Users from Print Operators and that seem to work. But when I remove Domain Users from Print Operators, users cannot print anymore. The SBS also acts as a file and print server. I had to add the Domain Users back into Print Operators to make network printing work again. Of course this now breaks the Send As function again. Any ideas how to get around this problem?

RWW Access Fails with Server Application Unavailable

RWW has worked successfully on my client's SBS2008 server for several years. Last Wednesday I downloaded and installed a large number of Windows & Security updates, including Update Rollup 6 for SBS2008.

Following the required server reboot, trying to access the RWW screen results in a "500 Internal Server Error" and "Server Application Unavailable". The message also suggests 'An error message detailing the cause of this specific request failure can be found in the application event log of the web server. Please review this log entry to discover what caused this error to occur.' and I can only find the following information event (ie Not an error) in the server's application event logs:

SBS 2011 RWW allow access to a different SharePoint site

We have SBS2011 Premium and RWW accessible to the Internet.  Our developers stood up a second server with SharePoint team services to host the company's intranet site instead of using CompanyWeb.  My question is it possible to link this second internal website on RWW and make it available externally to the internet.

I am trying to avoid doing this at the firewall layer, another external IP, another SSL cert, External DNS name.

Thanks in advance.

Dreaded "Cannot Configure Backup Schedule" on SBS 2011

$

Hello Folks,

I am aware of problems that caused the dreaded "cannot configure backup schedule" errors when adding backup destination disks to SBS 2008 and ways to work around the bug, but I am now hitting the same errors on two different SBS 2011 servers, and the work-arounds for SBS 2008 do not seem to apply. Here's the basic system specs:

HP ML350 G6 and a similar HP ML350 G5 Quad-Core Xeon server

New SBS 2011 Standard installation, no other software yet installed

All current HP PSP drivers and firmware for Win 2008 R2 installed, all runs well

460GB of formatted disk space on a RAID5 single partition, 427GB currently free

Two partitions listed - C: and System Reserved, both NTFS, created by SBS 2011 installer

8GB of memory installed

Connect any common USB portable backup disk (using some new Seagate 500GB FreeAgent GoFlex drives, 465GB formatted capacity)

Run SBS 2011 Console Configure Backup, accept all defaults except backup once per day at 11:00 pm, format first connected drive

All works fine, backups work fine

Connect any second USB harddisk, Run Configure Backup and/or Add Backup Destination and add second drive using Wizard

Receive error "Cannot Configure Backup Schedule"

Try using Windows Backup to add second destination (which sometimes worked in SBS 2008), receive numerous errors about "cannot format"

If I use Disk Management to reformat any of the USB disks, they work fine, can copy files without issues, chkdsk reports no errors. Only Windows Backup and SBS Backup cannot add a second destination disk. I can disable the SBS Backup system, and then re-add any one of the disks as the first destination fine. The only problem is that I cannot add a second or third destination disk.

Note that this issue was submitted to the Partner support boards first, but they are informing me that they will not begin supporting SBS 2011 until mid-February. Does anyone have suggestions as to what might be going on here?

Installing "Certification Authority Web Enrollment" Role on sbs 2008 problem

I want to install "Certification Authority Web Enrollment" Role service on Windows SBS 2008. It is no problem to make default installation. But my problem is that I have WSS 3.0 Web application "http://companyweb" on "Default Web Site".

If I try to install certsrv on http://companyweb/certsrv and open it, I get "HTTP 404 Not Found" page.I tried to open http://companyweb/certsrv/default.asp, but got this error

The following file(s) have been blocked by the administrator: /CertSrv/default.asp

Troubleshoot issues with Windows SharePoint Services.

Is there a way to move certsrv to another Web Site?

Or exclude from managed paths in sharepoint - well I already have tried it, but didn't work for me

Can someone help me, please.

I really appreciate any help you can provide.

Network connection issue on restart

I am having a strange issue on a SBS 2008 server. When the server is restarted users cannot connect to the server, no DHCP is issued. However, if you log on the server and disable the network adapter and then enable it again users are able to access the server again until the next restart.

I have tried using the second NIC card as well as removing the drivers and reinstalling them. I have also updated to the latest drivers but to no avail.

Has anyone else come across this problem?

Thanks

Rob

I have a new installation of SBS 2011 Standard edition.  The console works great except when I click on the Network tab.  It always crashes.   The following is a message pulled from the console.log file.  Does anyone have experience with this crash and a fix/work around for it?

Hi

I am about to use a service for SMTP to relay all emails to me. Obviously I have to end up Opening Port 21, which most SBS users already have done for all incoming email traffic.

However I don't want this open to all external emailers as a route in. (Does anyone have an actual issue with this?) Also as I am about to use an external spam filtering service, I don't want to give spammers a way to bypass it

I have 3 IP's of their servers, unfortunately they aren't close together for a simple range. i.e. 69.28.x.x, 198.20.73.x and 198.20.89.x

Ideally I would have liked to have told my router to filter these. But using a Netgear DGN2200 for wired/wireless router network means that I can either say ALL, Single IP or Range of IP for a port forwarding rule (and the same Port can not be configured 2 or 3 times with 3 single IP settings (unless anyone knows either a better router to use where you can specify 3 single IP's for a firewall? or knows a way around this with Netgear routers)

This therefore leaves me with having to configure SBS2011.

Either I need to configure the SBS2011 software firewall.... how do I access that to say Port 21 incoming should only be those 3 IP's
or
Configure Exchange to only receive... I read somewhere about Incoming Mail Connector Hub being the place... seems to have 3 IP ranges. The middle one being the local network the other 2 being all the other IP's... should these be configured that the mail connector only users internal IP's and the specified Filtering service?

Any suggestions?

I suppose my only other method would be an additional Firewall as a separate hardware unit that the router plugs into... any suggestions and how easy is it to configure???

Hi Guyz,

I'm going through lot of forums and articles but still can't able to find any solid answer for this.

I have a domain running in SBS server.I wanted to setup backup domain for fault tolerance, in case primary fails.Shall I add another SBS machine in this domain and make it as BDC for fault tolerance ? Is it possible?

What should be reason if it's not possible?

SBS 2008 - Windows 8.1+ clients trouble accessing file server shares

I have now upgraded 1 Windows 8 machine to Windows 8.1, and also clean installed another with Win 8.1 update 1 today, and both machines have trouble accessing the SBS2008 file server shares by UNC. If I browse by IP address of the server it seems to work flawlessly. The odd thing is that it's sporadic. So if I browse in explorer to "\\*netbiosname*\share" the Win8.1 machine will sometimes be able to access the share, and other times it will fail with a "network unable to reach location etc.." error. When it does work, it can take up to 5-10 minutes while explorer is frozen before the share is accessed. We're running quite a few Windows 8 machines without a problem, but it seems to be a specific problem with 8.1. Any idea?

Corrupt WSUS Database. Updates not being installed.

Windows SBS 2008 Standard

The server (a domain controller) and all attached workstation are reporting that they cannot install updates.

When I manually run Windows update I get error: 8024400e

All signs point to a corrupt WSUS database.

I have tried to follow the steps here:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd443475(v=ws.10).aspx

I get to step #4 under "To manually recover Windows Server Update Services" when I open "Update Services" through administrative tool I get "Error: Connection Error".  I can't go any further than that.

Another clue is that when I open SQL Manger the WSUS data base is marked "SUSPECT".

What are the risks involved with uninstalling and reinstalling Windows Server Update Services?

Can someone provide me with a guide or another possible solution?

Thanks!

Hello, I need to move Office 2007 Small Business Edition from my old unsupported XP computer to a new 8.1 computer.  I have the original disks, jewel case and validation code and this appears to be a retail version of the software.  Would appreciate any assistance.  Thank you.
