SBS 2011 Store.exe allocating too much memory despite cache adjustment

0

I have a client who is using the trial version (on a new HP ML350 G6 with 12GB RAM allocated to the VM) for their office of six.  They like the product, except it will get very slow for several minutes a few times per day.  When store.exe has a reasonable amount of memory allocated (usually for a while after a restart) the problem does not happen.  Right now, it has almost 5GB allocated.

I have read several articles online regarding adjustment of the msExchESEParamCacheSizeMax.  There are conflicting numbers out there about the actual size of the cache blocks, so I am not actually sure I am limiting yet having it set to 50,000.  I have reduced this number by about half each time, having done this maybe four times now (I think I started at 500,000 when I errantly thought the blocks were 4KB each - I am still not sure what they are [have seen both 8KB and 32KB mentioned in support docs])

The server does have Trend Micro Worry-Free Business Standard on it, using their latest version whose patch level (1435) is supposed to be SBS 2011 compatible.  I can pretty well guess they might be part of the issue, but I still should be able to limit the cache independently.

Please advise.  Thanks, Tom.

I was going to upgrade my SBS2008 to a new server and SBS2011 (((((((((((

Then today I found out that SBS2011 has been discontinued and there is not going to be an SBS repacement. (((((

I have SBS2011 install files and program key off of the MAPS website but now I'm wondering if I should even bother to install it.  I would prefer to stay within the "mainstream" of technology today and be ready to upgrade from there in the future.

Given a perfectly fine running SBS2008, what should I upgrade to now?  Do I go to separate machines running all the new servers (SQL2012, Exchange2012, Sharepoint, etc) ?  How would you break up all the functions (Domain, DHCP, Exchange, Sharepoint, SQL, etc)?

Where would I get a new Sharepoint company website?

SBS made this all pretty easy before, now I am looking at what seems a monumental task.

SBS2011 randomly hangs for 15-20 mins

Got a bit of an odd one here. I've got a HP DL180 running SBS2011 that will run happily for days, then out of the blue it will hang. When it hangs, I cant log in through RDP, nor by walking up the the server and logging in via the console. Everyone looses access to the network shares, exchange, etc, however it will still respond to ping, thats about the only thing it will do.

When I check the logs after it comes back up, theres nothing unusual there at all.

Ilo is also unresponsive. That comes and goes tho. It will work sometimes, but so far, I havent been able to get in while the server was frozen. I'm not sure if thats any way related, or if thats a seperate issue. But I thought I would mention it just in case.

So the iLo problem and console not working got me thinking it was a hardware problem. When I have been able to get into iLo, the logs show nothing recorded for the times the server locked up. I phoned HP for their advice, they had me run a whole heap of tests which generated a diagnostic report. HP guy went through the report and came back to tell me there were no problems anywhere. (I beg to differ...)

Anyway, normally when it locks the only way to get it back it to do a hard reset. We usually have to do that pretty quickly because people need it running to do their work. But it went again yesterday afternoon, just before everyone was going home, so they were a little delayed in telling us it had hung. Then because everyone was done for the day, I spent a little longer than usual trying to get in via iLo and/or RDP than I normally would, and after about 15-20 it suddenly let me RDP in. Everything was back to normal. I had one of the guys on site try to access the console again, and it was working too.

A check of the event logs once again showed nothing of use for the period the server was frozen. But interestingly, it was still logging like nothing was wrong. There were no gaps in the log.

So the fact that, given time, it will recover itself now has me leaning more towards it being a software problem rather than a hardware problem (so that would make iLo being not responsive a seperate issue, I would assume).

Another thing I should probably mention. This server is running trend worry free business... the one that has issues with SBS and causes the network to drop out. But from what I've read, that issue causes the server to not respond to ping, and I've installed the patch to fix that problem anyway. Just thought I'd mention it anyway.

So my question is, where do I go from here? It appears totally random, I cant pinpoint any possible cause. And now im even unsure as to whether its a hardware or software problem.

Happy to provide more details if needed.

Thanks.

Large Dump File

I have a 6 GB file called c:\dumpfile.dmp.  I can't open it, re-name it, move it, copy it, Change permissions, or delete it.  It is grayed out and does not show in command prompt.  It says it is open in another program.  I shut everything down and tried again, to no avail.  How can I get rid of this large file?

SBS 2008 - Two Concerns

0
0

Hi all,

I have 2 concerns with an SBS 2008 box.

1) Recently whenever the server is rebooted, it will no longer connect back to the internet.  A user with administrative access must login to the console, and run the "Connect to the Internet" wizard to establish connectivity.  This happens when no other network changes have taken place.  Given that the server is at a remote office, and the manager with administrative access works part time at this office and often travels elsewhere, it's highly annoying for the office staff as they are dead in the water until someone can get out there.  This only started happening within the last month or so.

2) In light of concern 1, I spent some time onsite trying some troubleshooting.  This included testing different modem hardware (for the default gateway), with no change.  Then I tried to manually uninstall the most recent round of Microsoft Updates - one by one - to see if any of these caused any issues.  After uninstalling the first one (KB2916036), the server would not boot.  It froze on "Applying Computer Settings" every time.  It would boot OK into Safe Mode, where I was able to apply KB2004121, however this did not help.  Eventually I had to restore the entire server from the previous night's backup.  Naturally the morning's work had been lost and the entire office was extremely upset.

3) Make that three concerns - the receptionist who changes the backup disk daily would like to be able to check if the daily backup was successful or not.  Due to Exchange not being setup on this box (emails hosted elsewhere), is it possible to have the backup results published to either a user's Remote Web Access, or onto the Companyweb?

If someone can assist with either of these concerns it would be most appreciated, because at present we have a server that can no longer be rebooted remotely.  Thanks.

SBS 2011 & Mac 10.9 - file saving Issues?

0

Hi

Been having some very strange issues with my iMac (10.9) after our server being upgraded to SBS 2011 recently. When saving files, I get errors, upon which the original file (if overwriting) will disappear without warning, or errors to say I don't have access etc. Either that or it will say it can't save a file, and then actually have saved two version of it.... These are all intermittent though.

Most worrying has been the Mac shutting down immediately due to an unknown error when saving or selecting a file on the server....

Our server guys (external) say it's not the "server" and must be the iMac compatibility, so I've been digging around. I've found that there apparently should be software installed not the Mac (which they didn't suggest), so would this help?!

I don't need to be linked in to calendars, outlook or any of that - I solely just need access to read and write to the server. Today I tried removing all server details, and connecting again, but it took ages to reconnect and I'm still not sure quite what I did to get it to work!

If anyone has any experience with these issues or could let me know if I definitely need to install this software, that would be great!

Many thanks!

Ben

Backup fail with VSSwriter error

Hello,

we currently are using Symantec Backup on tape and Windows Server Backup to make two differents backups on a SBS 2008.

We are getting failed backup randomly during the week for both. Sometimes one is succeed and not the others.

We have found several post about the VSS issues and how to fix it but nothing has changed.

What we have done:

- check the VSS writer and all is in "no error" state

- check the settings of the backups

- restart the VSS services

- Configure the Shadow Copy on the drives

- reboot the server

- Tried several solutions from forums

What we can see in the event viewer

ID 12289

"Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error VSS_E_WRITER_STATUS_NOT_AVAILABLE. An older active writer session state is being overwritten by a newer session. The most common cause is that the number of parallel backups has exceeded the maximum supported limit.  hr = 0x80042409.

"

Some will post the link of "how to troubleshoot VSSwriter issue": we have already used it.

Does someone have a fresh idea about this issue ?

Thanks in advance

JRNL_WRAP_ERROR SBS 2003 R2 PREM

Hello

This SBS server was moved to a new site and was not powered up again for 5
days. It has been working fine for a week now.

However, if the server is re-booted the following error is reported. Please
advise if I should set  the "Enable Journal Wrap Automatic Restore" registry
parameter to 1" as stated and if this will cause any unknown problems. Please
bear in mind that this is the only DC in the SBS domain.

NtFrs Event ID 13568
The File Replication Service has detected that the replica set "DOMAIN
SYSTEM VOLUME (SYSVOL SHARE)" is in JRNL_WRAP_ERROR. Replica set name is : "DOMAIN SYSTEM VOLUME (SYSVOL SHARE)" Replica root path is : "c:\windows\sysvol\domain" Replica root volume is : "\\.\C:" A Replica set
hits JRNL_WRAP_ERROR when the record that it is trying to read from the NTFS
USN journal is not found. This can occur because of one of the following
reasons. [1] Volume "\\.\C:" has been formatted. [2] The NTFS USN journal on
volume "\\.\C:" has been deleted. [3] The NTFS USN journal on volume "\\.\C:"
has been truncated. Chkdsk can truncate the journal if it finds corrupt
entries at the end of the journal. [4] File Replication Service was not
running on this computer for a long time. [5] File Replication Service could
not keep up with the rate of Disk IO activity on "\\.\C:". Setting the "Enable Journal Wrap Automatic Restore" registry parameter to 1 will cause
the following recovery steps to be taken to automatically recover from this
error state. [1] At the first poll, which will occur in 5 minutes, this
computer will be deleted from the replica set. If you do not want to wait 5
minutes, then run "net stop ntfrs" followed by "net start ntfrs" to restart
the File Replication Service. [2] At the poll following the deletion this
computer will be re-added to the replica set. The re-addition will trigger a
full tree sync for the replica set. WARNING: During the recovery process data
in the replica tree may be unavailable. You should reset the registry
parameter described above to 0 to prevent automatic recovery from making the
data unexpectedly unavailable if this error condition occurs again. To change
this registry parameter, run regedit. Click on Start, Run and type regedit.
Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. Click down the key path: "System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NtFrs\Parameters" Double click on the
value name "Enable Journal Wrap Automatic Restore" and update the value. If
the value name is not present you may add it with the New->DWORD Value
function under the Edit Menu item. Type the value name exactly as shown
above.

Remote endpoint IP is same as Exchange servers own IP

Hello All

On one of our client SBS 2011 server we are detecting an unusual behaviour

On the SMTPRecive log Exchange servers own public IP is listed as the Remote Endpoint IP for each and every external connection.

When we telnet into the server its the same , instead of the Public IP which the telnet session is coming its showing its own IP.

How can we change this behaviour?

Thanks

Exchange server 2010 not forwarding messages with links in emails.

Hi,

I have a SBS Server 2011 with Exchange server 2010.

All the client PC's are Imac using Entourage 2008 with EWS.

If a user recieves an email and the forwards the email to an external user the email will not be sent  by exchange.

This is only for email where the original message has links in the email like facebook, or twitter for example. If the links are removed before sending the message , the message will be sent.

The error message that is being genereated by exchange is

#550 4.4.7 QUEUE Expired

Is this a configuration problem with Exchange.

I am using the ISP smart host to send email through Exchange on port 25.

I am also using forwarders in DNS server settings. (ISP DNS Server IP addresses). root hints are also enabled.

The server has one LAN port in use and the DNS server address of the server is a local IP address. ie 192.168.0.20

any help or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Questions regarding WSUS 3.0 update

Hi everyone,

Just ran Windows Update in our newly installed Win SBS 2008, but before the updates download finished I had to abruptly stop it and turned off the server because of electric power outage. After that, the WSUS 3.0 SP2 update (KB972455) is shown Cancelled in the update summary window, is this mean the update is already in the Win SBS 2008? Or do I have to re-download it again through the Windows Update?

I'm using the WSUS 3.0 SP1 (pre-installed in the Win SBS 2008) to update the client's computers, and I opted for downloading the available updates directly from Microsoft. Is this mean the updates will be downloaded directly to the client's computers and not saved in the server? Or will the updates still be saved first in the Win SBS 2008 before deployed to client's computers?

I'm setting up the internet connection through the second NIC in Win SBS 2008 machine, and I understand the Win SBS 2008 doesn't support two NICs in the same server machine, will the WSUS 3.0 perform the updates for the client's computers? Here's the simple diagram of the internet connection:

Internet ---> ADSL Wireless Router <--First NIC--> Win SBS 2008 <--Second NIC--> Client's Computers

Thanks for the helps.

Dhow here.

Server Name Changed after update

I'm new to SBS 2011 so I don't know much about it yet.  I updated a server for a client and when the server retarted the name for the server that showed up in the Network had changed.  It's now showing up as WIN-P0NIHSQCMU2.  I tried restarting from the last know good configuration and that didn't work.  The biggest problem is because the name has changed no one can gain access to the server over the network.   Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Need to connect synology NAS to SBS 2008

I am doing some volunteer work for a friend. They are a small organization 10 people running SBS 2008 with no tech support. The server is set up with mirrored 250GB drives which only have .9GB (900MB) of space left.  They just got a Synology 213 NAS with 2x2GB drives and I want to transfer to that then set them up with roaming profiles and have the profiles sit on the NAS.

They are not running Exchange/SharePoint/SQL.  It is just primarily an AD, DNS, File, & print server with no space.

I have connected the NAS to the domain and have given domain users access to read and write some folders. I am still unable to view shares (via the network) or transfer any files. How can I view shares so that I can transfer some files?

SBS2008 to EX2013 migration - Disable IPv6?

0
0

Migrating SBS 2008/EX2007 to EX2013. EX2013 Deployment Wizard sez disable IPv6 as described here in Susan's blog:

http://msmvps.com/blogs/bradley/archive/2014/01/22/smbkitchen-disabling-ipv6-or-not.aspx

Susan said she planned to skip that step back in January, but no followup to know how it turned out.

When I disabled IPv6 on my SBS2008 (using the DisabledComponents=0xffffffff registry entry) I had major connectivity problems and had to re-enable IPv6. As one example, restarting Win 7 computers required booting them and logging on while off the LAN. Then the network cable could be reconnected. Otherwise, the computer took hours to boot & log on, and Explorer would crash regularly once it did.

It looks like I'm going to HAVE to skip that step, but I'm wondering what I'm getting into by doing that. Anyone know if there's fallout during migration from leaving IPv6 enabled on the SBS, or anything I'll have to do differently?

Thanks!

Windows 8.1 does not report properly in SBS console

0

We are on SBS 2011 Standard with a mix of Windows 7 and 8.1 clients. For some reason all of the clients are reporting properly except for 1 of the 8.1 machines. The machine in questions shows:

Status-Online

Security Status-Not Available

Update Status-Unknown

Other Alerts-OK

So far I have checked for records in DNS forward/ Reverse lookup zones as well as DHCP and there is only a single matching record for the client in each.  I also verified it is listed in >MyBusiness>Computers>SBSComputers which it is.

I have fully disabled the Norton A/V on the client and verified that the only firewall running is the Windows firewall as configured by the SBS policy.  I also updated group policies on the client just to be sure.

I have searched these forums as well as several others and nothing I can find has helped.

For reference I am using WSUS and approving all updates from there.

SBS 2008 - How to rebuild the reporting database

0
0

I'd like to start using the inbuilt reporting facilities in SBS2008.  But when I start up the console and click on "Reports", although I am taken to the SBS2008 console's reports screen, a couple of seconds later, the following error message is displayed:

"There was an error while loading data for this page".

When I click "Close" to close the error message, I'm left looking at the console's reports screen but with nothing shown.  The top pane simply says:

"There are no reports to display".

So, I then click on "Add a new report" in the right-hand pane.  Nothing happens for a couple of minutes - not even an hour glass.  Eventaully, a window opens up, headed "New Report Properties".  So, I had a go at creating a new report, e.g.:

- Report Name = Test123

- Content = Summary

- E-Mail Options = I entered my email address

- Schedule = I set it to daily at 9pm

When I clicked "Ok", after a couple more minutes of thinking, it came back with:

"The report properties cannot be saved. Reopen the Report Properties dialog, and then try again."

I don't know how to tackle this issue.  I administer the network here but don't know SQL Server - and we don't have any SQL Server applications of our own - just the inbult ones like WSUS.

If there is a problem with the actual reporting database, I'd be happy to rebuild it, or even reinstall SQL.   But I don't know how.   My main concern is that WSUS is running beautifully and I don't want to go anywhere near anything that might break it.  I would rather have no reports than lose WSUS.

Could someone point me to some step-by-step instructions aimed at someone who knows Windows Server (to an extent) and SBS2008 - but has no knowledge of SQL Server?
